remembering that i dedicated my '24 annual conforto comment to the most baffling single-game performance i have ever seen:
There can be few players less exciting than a corner outfielder with below-average speed and three home runs after June 8. This is best illustrated by Game 162, in which Conforto saw 10 pitches in the zone and swung at seven, essentially a league-average rate. He somehow managed to be called out on strikes three times in four trips to the plate; even forgiving that two were borderline calls, it was a truly remarkable way to end the season. In a game with no impact on the standings, watching strike three on three separate occasions is fully distinct from how any fan would approach the sport, and the last ꓘ came on a fastball right over the middle of the plate.

this is somehow worse for baseball than the format suggestion i almost included at the end of the alcs preview when everyone was on maximum discourse
the team with the top record in each league plays one game against the second wild card team; this is an exhibition for the top seed, who is guaranteed a spot in the al/nlcs; if the second wild card team loses, they are out of the playoffs and seeds #2 through 4 play in a three-game, three-day round robin held at a rotating location, and the top team from the round robin joins the top seed in the al/nlcs; if they second wild card team wins, the four teams play a bracket comprised of one-game series to join the al/nlcs, which is now 11 games; during the times of the pre-alcs rounds, the two top seeds play each other in one or more exhibitions to avoid ‘rust’; similarly, if one 11-game al/nlcs ends early, the loser must stick around to play exhibitions in the winner’s home stadium
