It feels like a large part of both culture and politics these days is people wondering “why don’t I feel the way I did when I was 12”

There's a lot of overlap between folks who talk a big game about being "manly" in order to be a protector of women in the abstract and folks who routinely speak about, and treat, actual women with disrespect, derision, and abuse.
