I think they hear them crunching on the grass roots. It's easy for them to pull up the clumps of sod because the larvae have destroyed the roots.

If it were (Australian) magpies, I know they can hear beetle larvae. Perhaps your crows can too?

I see this a lot on my university campus - but I've always wondered how they know where the larvae are. Do they guess? Can they smell them? Hear them?
