Advisor to Zuva and Vigilant AI, author of AI for Lawyers. Previously I co-founded Kira Systems and served as CTO.

I've loved science my whole life and obtained Ph.D and M.Math degrees in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo.
I doubt the public has any idea what a GPT is though. For most AI appears to mean some combination of LLMs and image generation. And even then it’s specific uses. Eg I doubt the anti AI crowd is against using transformer models to analyze astronomy data. As a former AI researcher it’s sad to see.

The lack of clear language around AI has really become an issue. There are many AI algos that are of benefit to science and humanity, but all are now all lumped together with LLMs and diffusion image models. Even the latter have some beneficial uses. Maybe we should focus on applications not tech.

Sure but even simple word vector models can discover relationships between words. It’s not a crazy idea that large prediction models can infer relationships between more complex concepts. That said, you’re right that these models are not trained to make correlations specifically.

100% the conservatives need to right the ship and elect a leader with integrity and a platform that isn’t a copy of the US. Canada needs a better Conservative Party for a healthy democracy.

Oh, the same reddit that stole their own users content with a silent terms change that we couldn't opt out of? Reddit has no ethics and I wish there were a good replacement. I deleted all my content from that site but have no faith that they actually honoured the request.

Fair speech. If one person speaks at 100x the volume of another, effectively only one is heard. Both of you have free speech but it's not "fair speech."

This is the basis for restricted political donations, but it should apply farther. Algorithms in socials are also not fair speech for example.

We should invest in Canadian AI like @cohere instead. Lack of funding is a major reason Canadian startups take US money.

Glad I switched to @kagi.com ! The decline of Google continues.

I think it is objectively worse in at least legibility, due to transparency, and speed, due to excessive animations. We can argue about looks all day and that can be a personal preference, but it is definitely a huge failure on actual usability.

Outside of math and computer science, you can’t have ai generated science. At best you can have generated hypotheses, but those shouldn’t be papers. OTOH if a properly designed experiment validates a hypothesis, it should matter its source.

We also need to couple this with more serious archive methods. Etching into diamonds or whatever sort of 100k material along with decoding instructions.

I’d love to help build such a thing. Overall I agree with you.

That’s a fair criticism, and I guess I’m guilty of it too. Something concrete for me to do better at: make more technical comments!

You mean topics like AI and machine learning? I agree that there is a frustrating amount of division and lack of understanding around AI that makes it hard to discuss. But that’s also a wider phenomenon, it’s not Bluesky specific. Also I’m sure X has similar issues discussing vaccines.

It takes time to build community anew.

It's sad to see the attacks on science continue. No, science is not broken, objectivity is not gone. You don't get to make up your norms then force the science to agree. That is not science. Politicians have always hated science because of its independence and objectivity. That is still true.

Nah, LCBO has excellent beer selection. You can also buy beer at breweries and bottle shops and grocery stores. The beer store is owned primarily by Molson, Labatt, and Sleeman, which are owned by even bigger foreign companies. No reason they need a government granted monopoly. Buy Local.

And yet, years ago they were very adamant that they couldn’t refer to me as Dr (the PhD type) because I wasn’t employed at a university. At the time I still publishing papers from an industry position, and routinely went to academic conferences, but it didn’t matter.

🤣 Amazing.

Missed your calling as a lawyer! 🤣

I hear you, but at the same time I don't think this behaviour is driving any traffic to X. Twitter is dead, along with the moment in time discussions that happened there. Now, X is the place to troll and stare at accident scenes.

Perhaps this model of social media always devolves into division.

Is there another model besides ads with a for pay ad free tier? I guess there is the "ads whether you pay or not" model but in that case people like me will be gone.
