It strikes me that the worst corruption is corruption we don't even see cuz it's completely normal & legal & public. People who come from the same money, go to the same schools, sit on the same boards, make business/policy decisions involving public funds overseen by the same people. Closed system.

Drove to Sainte-Adele tonight for a gig. Cold weather for early December. This woman heard the anglo accent in my French & said "pretty cold here up North, eh?"

All us anglos live way down South in Montreal, i guess. But Montreal's 45 minutes away. We get weather too.

Anyway, i live in Lachute.

There's some "country" playing in the bar while i'm setting up for my gig. Written by committee, beat-quantized, pitch-corrected, amp plug-in tones, it might as well be AI & it might well be. Studies show that people like songs that sound like songs they already know. So make it AI & call it a day.

"He said he didn't do it, so i don't have to make that decision".

That's quite the quote.

i can no longer be sure if something's really live or not. Often it's obvious, of course. but there's so much lip sync & even when it's real at the show. the video's been so fixed that it might as well be a studio track. It's disheartening. More than ever, i prefer stuff that's a bit rough & lo-fi.

Hey Gen-Whatever!

Future you will recoil in horror at old photos of you with tiday's "cool" mullet.

i know, i was there the first time. i'm just letting you know so you can dodge the mullet.

9 years ago, i thought the metaphor for HIM would be Nickelback or acid-wash jeans; lotsa of people liked it until suddenly they didn't. The novelty wore off fast. But that's not the metaphor. If his "charm" is wearing thin, it's taking a while. And.. the other 2 things aren't demonstrably evil.

We have to laugh.
We have to laugh to keep from crying.
That's true.
But we also have to laugh in their faces.
Even with all the suffering they're causing, they're hilarious.
Hilarious, ridiculous, absurd, pathetic.
We have to let them see that we see it.
Eventually everyone will.
We have to laugh.

i have to say this out loud in public once in a while.

i am an atheist.

i hate being this grumpy old guy, but when i hear a then-current song in a late 90s tv show, i find myself yearning for a time when songs written by humans, played by humans on actual instruments, and sung by people with actual voices, was mainstream popular music.

Fuck the fucking racist CAQ government of Québec.

This is my province (my nation, if you insist), too.

We will not go down this mean little parochial path of cultural weaponised fear of "other".

Fuck that.

Queb3c MNAs wanted to sanction Haroun Bouazzi

"God knows I see this in the National Assembly every day, the construction of this other, this other who is Maghrebi, who is Muslim, who is Black, who is Indigenous and whose culture, by definition, would be dangerous or inferior."

i believe him.

It doesn't have to be a secret cabal. It can be a confluence of interests pulling in the same direction. That doesn't make it less dangerous. A small group with more money than most countries can do a lot of pulling.

Of the 1 or 2 people reading this, a couple of them must be saying "well, duh."

19th century politicians campaigned by train, doing whistle stops. Then came radio & FDR's campfire talks. Then TV & Nixon losing to Kennedy cuz he looked sweaty. And then the internet. Obama handled it ok. Trudeau, kinda cringe. THIS GUY handles it like a pro. A pro troll. Can we be POST internet?

Grumpy old fart warning:

Hearing a playlist of Latin pop. All the songs have that reggaeton beat. All the music is programmed keys over programmed beats, so the focus must be the vocals. But the vocals are all that total autotune thing, so not really vocals.

But real Latin musicians are so heavy.

You think maybe it's time to do something about the notwithstanding clause? i know... we'd have to open up the constitution business and get Québec to sign on and all that shlimazel. But provinces are using it when they want to blow their noses now.

i'm sure i've said this before, but i get tired of all the touchy-feely stuff on Star Trek Discovery. Please stop sharing your emotions and go stop some self-destruct countdown at the last second. Please stop giving speeches about leaving no one behind and go invert some phase coils or something.

Obvious there's a trick.

i've been seeing a lot of obituaries in the past few days, but can we hold off on counting chickens?

These people are lying, cheating, anti-democratic shitheads. They will work every angle, cross any line, violate everything their country's best documents stand for.

i heard Talking Heads "More Songs About Buildings And Food" for the first time in years & a couple of things struck me. Firstly, how influenced were they by Television? Did Tom Verlaine ever say anything about them? Secondly, did that early CBGBs punk scene invent post-punk before UK punk?
November 17, 2025 at 8:35 AM
Music captured our imagination. We took instruments & plunked away, not very well, then a little better, then a little better. We went out in front of people & plunked away. We sang & played mostly in tune, mostly in time, with okay sound. It mattered that we knew how to do it by hand, ourselves.

Now that my streaming services have ads, i'm becoming aquainted with them again. There's a type of actor who gets hired to look "normal"... like... not the kind of model type that gets the TV show starring roles. But attractive while being "normal". i wonder how the casting goes for that.

Yeah, try saying that with real Alpha male energy.

For future reference, if the barrista doesn't know the difference between an allongé and an Americano, maybe just order an espresso.

Apparently, Iggy Pop has followed me on Bluesky. Do you think it's really him? The Godfather of Punk?
