The prologue to the Auraicept sets out an origin legend for the Irish language in which it is claimed that, ten years after the dispersal of the languages from the Tower of Babel, the Irish scholar Fénius Farsaid was asked by the school in Egypt to create a language from the best parts of all the languages then in existence—an endeavour that resulted, according to the text’s scholiast, in Goídelc (‘Irish’). This particular spin on the linguistic origin legend recounted in Genesis 11: 1–9 is a typical manifestation of a much broader literary phenomenon whereby medieval Irish scholars attempted to graft their own language and history onto the authoritative framework of biblical narrative.9 It also had the advantageous implication, however, that Irish did not originate in the sin of pride which led to the building of the Tower, thus serving to establish the superiority of that vernacular over all other languages.

Thirteen years ago today I took my daughter to the Vita Cortex protest in Cork.
I was planning just to walk along, but she wanted to know what the placards said. When I told her they said 'Justice for the workers' she asked me to get her one.
Proud of her then, and every day since.

Accordingly, there is diversity and inequality in things created, not by chance, not as a result of a diversity of matter, not on account of certain causes or merits intervening, but from God’s own intention in that He willed to give the creature such perfection as it was possible for it to have. Hence it is said (Gen. i. 31) : God saw all the things that He had made, and they were very good, after it had been said of each that they are good. For each one in its nature is good, but all together are very good, on account of the order of the universe, which is the ultimate and noblest perfection in things.

Myles Horton, social justice educator and co-founder of Highland Folk School, died on this day in 1990.
In the 1950's, Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks and John Lewis were all students at Highlander, which had become a sanctuary for the formative Civil Rights Movement.

I've seen it in the labor movement, I've seen it in the civil rights movement, I've seen it in the antiwar movement. Since I know those things can happen on a small scale, I assume that if we ever get wise enough and involve enough people, it could happen on a bigger scale. If you have that hope, when you work with people and try to help them learn-and not teach them, because that gets into techniques and gimmicks-and you believe in them, then you inspire them by your belief. You can't help people grow if you don't think they can, because you are going to find ways to help prevent them from growing. I think your belief in people's capabilities is tied in with your belief in a goal that involves people being free and being able to govern themselves.
