I say, he's just a child, & they look at me with their child eyes & child hearts, & I look back with mine. The bell rings. The year after that it's Mister Pip, fed to the pigs. I cry for Private Peaceful & his brother, for everyone in the Heart of Darkness, which is our whole world, for Mercutio, Joe Keller, Medea's babies, Ophelia, countless others. My reputation: the one who cries a lot. I cry for Peter too, for Beth, for André, Jess. In the staffroom, on the phone, in the Abbey church. How to explain that a death in the family is never less than a death in the family. I love you all. Be safe.

It’s been a wool blanket and Medieval poetry kind of weekend…
A book on a dark purple and green check patterned blanket. The book has the title Pearl in large letters across the front. Underneath it says Translated by Victor Watts. The publisher is Enitharmon. The book cover shows the face of a young woman. She is wearing a dark top and headscarf, and some jewellery around her neck and forehead. Her skin is so pale it is almost bright white. Her face is very narrow and oval.
