disabled/chronically ill 30-something. cant always reply & regularly forget bluesky exists.
theres something deeply fascinating that the two disability (protest) history events i focused my dissertation on have been made into very good documentaries.

i had more to choose from & don’t even remember why those two were the ones i picked. neat.

(DPN & 504 sit ins. first is new on apple tv.)

apple tv are releasing a documentary about Deaf President Now! and i am thrilled. the conclusion of my dissertation was “even disability history forgets key events”, of which DPN was one.

here’s the link to the abridged dissertation. i’m hoping the doc will include the diversity of the protest!
here is the first version. this is my regular writing style & is about 3,500 words long. it also has sources at the end.

it involves more analysis than the easier to read version.

in honour of it being four years since i started writing it; here is the reworked version i shared for disability pride month.

talking about 504 sit in & Deaf President Now!, in the context of how disability history is forgotten about even within history spaces.

sorry of forgot about updating. all went well, it’s not perfect but it’s miles better than anything i have had before.
engineer coming out tomorrow (very impressed at the speed) because i’m pretty sure it’s not positioned right for me. hoping that they can lower the seat/raise the wheels and it’ll be even better. frustrating that they didn’t catch it, im not supposed to do their job
in life updates, i now have a decent active user wheelchair and it’s mindblowing how much easier moving around is. i wheeled in in my old chair (light, self propelled) & it was a Struggle. wheeled out as easy as walking used to be !! im in love.

the difference having a (mostly*) accessible bathroom makes is wild. i can barely remember what it was like before but this is miles better. it’s also beautiful

*its too small to fit a wheelchair in so i have to walk but its as accessible as we could do.

One of my favorite sections is the “exertion does not equal exercise” portion. I think that is important for people without the illness to understand.

Exertion is ANYTHING that stresses or strains the system.

The Americans with Disabilities Act was signed 34 years ago today.

The Disability Rights Movement is for us all, as we have two possible futures: die young or live long enough to become disabled.

Be part of the movement. Watch Crip Camp on Netflix to learn the history. And wear an n95 in public.
