Early Spring ID of Leeks versus Garlic?

My garden patch is mature, allowing seasonal volunteers to sprout up "as is." Spring leek and garlic volunteers are difficult to ID. I want young leeks, but when I pull a it is garlic. How to tell the difference via a visual, aroma, color, old wife's tale ?

Old organic living article for your perusal. The attached is a copy from the publication "Organic Gardening and Farming." While going through some gardening books, this clipping fell out. I enjoyed the positive message years ago and hope you enjoy reading it! 😊

Past Life Suspicions . . . This art reached out and touched me. I suspect this may be a close representation of me in a past life. How exciting would it have been to prepare beans and sourdough bread in different ways daily?

First frost is late in MO USA. Sweet basil and parsley are the last surviving plants in my vegetable garden. Both are healthy, and a covering is planned to extend their life as long as possible. This morning's low temp was 38° F, so the 1st frost is not too far away!
