She has no real way of explaining the danger of their situation to her son, who is 17 years old but cognitively closer to a toddler. And as a single mother too weak to forage, she has no real way of ensuring their survival. She also is too old to benefit from a recent policy change the Thai government made in a bid to prevent mass starvation, granting work rights to some of the 107,000 Myanmar refugees who, like her, live in Thailand’s border camps. Her son never learned to speak, and needs her help with everything from getting dressed to using the toilet. Since the funding cuts, their survival has hinged on the charity of her Christian church, whose members occasionally give her handfuls of their rice. She suffers from diabetes and high blood pressure, and begins to sweat and grow dizzy when her hunger is at its fiercest. Some days, she eats nothing.

According to the Treasury source, the Trump dollar initiative would not have originated at a Mint production facility; it would have come from Washington, D.C. While there is a non-zero chance that someone at the Treasury has reason to expect Donald Trump to die soon, the much likelier explanation is that someone ordered this coin either not knowing or not caring that it appears to be against the law. "It's entirely possible that this is just some toady trying to score brownie points," said the source.

What are we to make of a man who called for the execution of the American president, and then was executed himself? What are we to make of an NFL that, on one hand, encourages us to “End Racism,” and, on the other, urges us to commemorate an unreconstructed white supremacist? And what of the writers, the thinkers, and the pundits who cannot separate the great crime of Kirk’s death from the malignancy of his public life? Can they truly be so ignorant to the words of a man they have so rushed to memorialize? I don’t know. But the most telling detail in Klein’s column was that, for all his praise, there was not a single word in the piece from Kirk himself.

But among some in the military who have worked with them, the SEALs have a reputation for devising overly bold and complex missions that go badly. Team 6’s debut mission, which was part of the U.S. invasion of Grenada in 1983, is a case in point. The plan was to parachute into the sea, race to the coast in speedboats and plant beacons to guide assault forces to the island’s airport. But the SEALs’ plane took off late; they jumped at night and landed in stormy conditions, weighed down by heavy gear. Four SEALs drowned, and the rest swamped their speedboats. The airfield was later seized by Army Rangers who parachuted directly onto the airfield.

But the claim that generative AI is a tool that can help a human to make art requires that the AI have no inspiration, that it does nothing but fulfill the prompt given to it by its human operator—were it otherwise, the human operator would have no more justifiable a claim to credit for the resulting work than an art-class teacher does for the paintings her students produce when she instructs them to portray a certain model. The only way for the human operator to claim authorship of an AI-generated work is for that work to contain nothing indicative of genuine artistry's mystery and expressiveness. Otherwise, the human operator might just as credibly stand in the vestibule at 6:30 in the evening, request a sunset, then step outside and claim to have created one.

The sight of Wall running all-out on a court with nine other world-class professional athletes could make you laugh, the high yelping laugh when you are witnessing something ridiculous and impossible, the one where without thinking about it you clap your hands to the sides of your head and grip your hair to keep everything attached. The whooping adrenalized what-the-fuck-was-that laugh after an ordinary-looking swell at the beach suddenly rears up into a 12-foot curling wave three times the height of the day's normal surf and ragdolls you around like a tumble dryer.

"The Free Press and other motivated outlets have to focus on allegations of media bias because they cannot defend the behaviors of Israel. You cannot argue, based on any reality, that the state of Israel is not committing genocide. Though the Free Press has certainly tried, what they are doing here is also cruel. What its journalists are arguing and trying to get away with is a malicious sleight of hand that attempts to discredit the people suffering and the outlets reporting on that suffering. It's a subtler, more cowardly form of evil, but evil nonetheless."

i know that i am fussing over semantics here to some extent and i do a lot of that. but i care about the kind of drift that happens when people stop tending the boundary between a concept like "art" and a concept like "generative AI"! no it is not true that most art will eventually be made with AI. no art will ever be made with AI, because art can only be made by humans, because that's what makes it art

It is important, it is revealing, and it is crucial to observe who played 9/11 Politics against Zohran. Who made a deliberate point of trying to make Jews like me hate and fear Zohran. It was DoorDash, Bloomberg, Ackman, Karp, and the rest. It was capital. 9/11 Politics were their means to divide the people of this city so they can continue conquering it. To keep the most vibrant city on earth out of reach of the working people—and particularly the immigrants and their children—who create its vibrancy. To keep New York what Bloomberg once called "a luxury product."
