With subzero temps hitting Alaska, there's no better time to see where energy is 'leaking' out of your home. First, look for obvious gaps by turning off any outside lights, turn the inside ones on when dark outside and then inspect door and window jams. Then use an infra red handheld imaging cam.

The equalizing term for looking at the energy output of fuels is MMbtu (a million British thermal units). A BTU is the amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of a pound of water by 1°F (under an atmospheric unit of pressure). Whether solid, gas or liquid- fuels can be measured with MMbtu's.

With the constrictors on airport travel this month, it will be interesting to see what the amount of fuel that was not burned- but also the tonnage of cargo that didn't get moved. It isn't just the lost of passenger ticket receipts that is an outcome when there is a shock to the U.S. aviation system.

One of the largest backup battery systems is operated by the utility in Fairbanks. While it allows for power storage that can help during outages, if utilized all at once for a community-wide blackout it would not provide more than a half hour of power. Thus roving outages are a more likely use.
