Incredibly the UK remains one of the world's largest economies and in the vanguard of many things - but it doesn't always feel like it. Aging infrastructure, too much inequality, too little care for local environment, too little local power and accountability - and a relentless RW onslaught.

Looking at a local council budget is always a sobering reminder of where money is spent and needed. This is Bristol’s. Basically it is adult and child social care and social services, and essential admin. That’s it. Everything else is totally marginal. In the environment sector, that’s largely bins.

Beautiful autumn colours in Bristol.

My kids schools are on strike today, their friends are here and going mad, so I maintain discipline in the house by wandering around with a wooden sword shouting like a pirate.

When you realise there is no booze, so you end up drinking the home made cassis.. too sweet. Next time less, or maybe even no sugar.

I mean in Daniel Hannan’s case this is literally true.

Terrifying. My neighbours just sent me this picture of their rabbit dressed for Halloween.

Solar panels are so great. Gloomy Halloween morning. Family in house doing whatever they are doing. Lights on. Heat pump ticking over keeping house warm. Exporting a tiny amount.

Looking at the figures it seems like the UK is experiencing excessive levels of Tony Blair at the moment. UK government needs to make sure it is not locked into long term Tony Blair dependency.

Two things can be true. Coal use at record highs, and fossil fuels being eclipsed by renewables. Both consistent with approaching the top of a curve in fossil fuels (and hopefully emissions). This is expected - eg Paris emissions pathways predicted global (not rich world!) FF increase until >2030.

Introducing market forces to public services really doesn't seem to work very well in a lot of cases, does it? Was pretty shocked to see this.

For anyone who think this is unfair, this is a graph of the insulation rates after Cameron had that moment when he'd look tough by going after the 'green crap'. Genuinely a huge strategic error which has led to far higher bills and reliance on international gas markets (e.g. Russia).

I find it amazing that we live in societies where pretty much everyone thinks they would have been in the French Resistance/Rebel Alliance/Sufragettes or would have ‘shot Hitler if they had had the chance’, and yet even the mildest acts of political dissent and protest are vilified.

My cat had a groomer round today. I can’t find her but this is in the living room. Perhaps all that is left of her.

They’ll need to do an awful lot more of this on a range of fronts, as well as crafting a positive narrative of what they want - and I’m really not sure they’ve got that yet - but this is better from Labour.

And let's never forget... Nigel with the Russian Ambassador he claimed he had never met... I've met a lot of people in my time too, but I tend to remember the Embassy meetings, even when they were common.

Wanna do something patriotic? Clean up the roads. This is the B3128. Absolute disgrace.

Half the bins in Bristol look like this. Overwhelmed. Of course we must tackle the source, but I think cities need - or need powers to - charge a levy on sellers of takeaways, drinks etc to pay for the clean up. @bristollibdems.bsky.social @labourbristol.bsky.social @bristolgreenparty.bsky.social

For what it’s worth I do not blame Keir Starmer for having Trump over and doing all the pomp - that’s how state visits work. My concern is more how does the UK begin distance itself strategically, politically and economically from an increasingly dangerous and deranged superpower.

Hi George - LinkedIn is very hard to search - I couldn't find the whole conversation. It was very amicable, I was just surprised. Debate was about MPA trawling bans in general (rather than just bottom trawling only - my mistake). Was still surprised at opposition to trawling bans in MPAs.

This is what climate transition looks like.

Wind and solar together doing 60% of UK electricity at the moment. Pretty unremarkable these days. Nuclear another 10%. Gas around 8%. We’re importing power from France and Netherlands and exporting it Norway and Ireland.
