Balham delivers Waxwings again today. Quite a few suitable berries in the area, so hopefully they stay a while🤞🏻

Possibly the caterpillar of a Speckled Wood butterfly or a moth of some sort - food for young Chiffchaffs now
November 16, 2024 at 9:31 AM
A Chiffchaff working quite hard to dispatch this caterpillar on @tootingcommon this afternoon
November 16, 2024 at 9:23 AM
Lots of slightly worn parents busy with their youngsters on @tootingcommon at the moment - Nuthatch!

This newly arrived Blackcap on #tootingcommon stops singing to watch a hunting Sparrowhawk
November 16, 2024 at 9:38 AM
A male Tufted Pochard hybrid duck visited #tootingcommon this afternoon. (The female Common Pochard ignored him completely.)

My first Mediterranean Gull (left) of the year on #tootingcommon this afternoon (@SurreyBirdNews, #londonbirdnews)
November 16, 2024 at 10:04 AM
@birdguides,@RareBirdAlertUK saw this raptor at Swale NNR, Kent, yesterday 1/1 at 12:53 heading SW over salt marsh from pillbox at (51.370784 , 0.94813943). Now think it Rough-legged Buzzard based on plumage and behaviour. What is your expert opinion? Thanks!

Egyptian Goose wash on #tootingcommon today
November 16, 2024 at 10:12 AM
Ok, well still not a lot of bird migration visible on #tootingcommon so here are some lichens instead .. Cladonia
November 16, 2024 at 10:20 AM
My new favourite damselfly, Willow Emerald, on #tootingcommon today, starting the next generation
November 16, 2024 at 10:20 AM
This distant Willow Emerald damselfly today is my first on #tootingcommon. They have spread well into SE England from Europe in less than 15 years.
November 16, 2024 at 10:28 AM
This Willow Emerald dragonfly at Beddington Farmlands in S. London/Surrey this afternoon - a recent range extension west from the continent apparently
November 16, 2024 at 10:36 AM
We saw this Brown Hairstreak on today's #tootingcommon butterfly survey, almost two years since the only other one, and in exactly the same spot! (@BC_Surrey @OsbornAnnabel)
November 16, 2024 at 10:36 AM
A Mother Shipton’s Moth was new for the butterfly survey on #tootingcommon today. Named after a sixteenth century prophetess because the wing pattern allegedly resembles her face with hook nose ..
November 16, 2024 at 10:51 AM
Lots of White-letter Hairstreak today on sunny #TootingCommon. A @BC_Surrey walk to see WLH on Thursday 17th leaves from Tooting Athletics track (SW16 1RR) at 10:30. Showers are forecast but with sunny intervals so hopefully WLH will still be seen. All welcome, binoculars useful.

This Banded Demoiselle wafting around #tootingcommon lake is the first I've seen here. (It was sticking to the tiny reed-bed so I could n't get a better photo without getting into the lake!)
November 16, 2024 at 10:59 AM
This Painted Lady the best of the butterflies on today's survey on @tootingcommon. Conditions looking good for summer butterflies but they are a bit late after the cool April then wet May ..
November 16, 2024 at 11:08 AM
This dozing pair of Common Pochard on @tootingcommon are my first here. On waking they looked startled (like they realised they were in the wrong neighbourhood!) and promptly flew off. (@White1939D)
November 16, 2024 at 11:08 AM
Two Mediterranean Gulls (furthest left and right) with the Black-headed Gull flock on Tooting Common this morning (@SurreyBirdNews @londonbirds, @NickRutter3, @White1939D). The black-headed bird has been around Clapham and Wandsworth Common since last year.
November 16, 2024 at 11:16 AM
Adult Mediterranean Gull on @tootingcommon today on football pitches from Dr Johnson Avenue, 11:40 - 12:20, before all the gulls flew off, perhaps elsewhere on Common (@SurreyBirdNews, @LondonBirdClub, @White1939D)
November 16, 2024 at 11:24 AM
This Mediterranean gull still on Clapham Common this afternoon, but no Whitefronts. (#londonbirds @surreybirdnews)
November 16, 2024 at 11:24 AM
The moulting redhead Goosander still present on @tootingcommon lake today. Was catching fish near the reeds and NOT accepting any nonsense from the Black-headed Gulls or Coots either!
November 16, 2024 at 11:32 AM
This Goosander on @tootingcommon lake this morning is the first one recorded here (thanks @White1939D). In the London/Surrey area they are more likely to visit reservoirs or rivers so this juvenile probably won't stay long.
