Well I'm sorta already on record being okay with locating noxious infrastructure in Barton Hills so
A tweet that I tweeted on Twitter in 2023 that says: "If Barton Hills folks are so insistent on having convenient access to M-14, I would like to offer modest proposal for realigning M-14 to maximize this benefit, while also solving noise complaints from Ann Arbor residents & safety issues with the Huron River bridge (cc #a2council)" I've drawn a line on a map that would route M-14 north along Wagner from where it currently diverges from I-94, then straight across Barton Hills, rejoining M-14's current alignment at the M-14 / US-23 North interchange. In fact rumor has it that MDOT (well, the technically at the time it was the Michigan State Highway Department) initially had planned to build M-14 this way, but pressure from the wealthy residents led them to route it right next to multiple schools instead. I was especially pleased to see that we were able to keep a little island between the travel lanes at Newport! The planned removal of crosswalk refuge islands had been, in my view, the only major downside of this project...

(I did also bring this up with staff. They didn't say "no, never", but they expressed concern about the gutters getting clogged and requiring more frequent maintenance. Everything's a tradeoff.)
A raised crosswalk that's fully at sidewalk height - you might also call this "continuous sidewalk". At the edges of the roadway, the curb gutters that existed prior to raised-crosswalk construction have not been modified; instead, this short section of the crosswalk bridges over the gutters using metal grates. The rest of the raised crosswalk (through the travel lanes) is a normal concrete hump. This design allows pre-existing storm drainage to continue to function without relocating underground infrastructure.

We have a problem in A2 where recent "raised" crosswalks are barely raised at all. Per city staff (youtu.be/6y9ItCbEQ6o?...) this is thanks to drainage and ADA grade limitations.

The explanations make logical sense to me, but still, somehow other cities manage to do this successfully...
A 2023 post on Twitter from Shannon Hautamaki, with a picture of a "raised crosswalk" that's not perceptibly different from the surrounding pavement except that it's paved with concrete instead of asphalt. The text of the post says: 'New “raised” crosswalk on Granger with a nearby elementary school, is not even raised, unless you’re a mouse. Very disappointing for the community who advocated for traffic calming. Why bother if you’re not going to put in any infrastructure that actually slows cars? #a2council'

Happy #weekwithoutdriving! To be honest I was probably not gonna drive this week anyway but hey let's make it official.

I'm going bikepacking soon so today I took the touring bike out for a test/shakedown ride, then (cuz I was tired from the first ride) e-biked over to REI for some supplies...

If by "sponsored" you mean it was funded with taxpayer money! And btw the Decadome guy was also *the treasurer of LGC* so this is basically cronyism / self-dealing.

Only $500 was actually spent, so honestly not that big a deal, though the initial proposal was for more than that...

It's ridiculous. I mean um ... you know that meme from Always Sunny with Charlie Day frantically explaining his Pepe Silvia conspiracy theory in front of a giant wall where he's taped up a bunch of papers and drawn red lines everywhere? It's basically that. I mean I guess if you're vision-impaired then that might not be a helpful reference but I'm having trouble coming up with anything better, sorry.

The Library had a possibly good idea for a mixed use development in its own footprint. For whatever reasons it is now using the politics of the moment, to take Over the central land of the Commons, This is no more acceptable than lsrael trying to take over Gaza, Cooperation is what we need The Library gets equity without accountability and the Mayor gets rid of the commons and he has his biggest possible building. This is not right.

... in fact, if you look closely, you will see that the 3M MPR 1900 (MERV 13) model had a *lower* pressure drop (i.e. restricted airflow less) than almost all of the other 1" filter models, even those with much lower MERV ratings.

This testing confirms the specifications provided by 3M itself.
Staff acquired pressure drop performance data from product labels available on 3M brand air filters offered for sale at local home improvement supply stores. The labels on these 3M filters conform to the proposed Title 20 air filter label format. Labeled pressure drop performance data for 1” MERV 5, 7, 11, 12, 13 (two MERV 13 models), and 14 are plotted in Figure 1 below. The data indicate there is no significant correlation between MERV rating and pressure drop for these models. Note the highest pressure drop performance in this dataset is shared by MERV 7/MERV 14, the second highest pressure drop is for MERV 5, and the lowest pressure drops correspond to the MERV 13 models. Thus, the often-heard concern that MERV 13 filters would cause higher pressure drop in space conditioning systems does not apply to this 3M filter model lineup. Staff’s understanding is that 3M air filter products represent a major share of California air filter sales.

The California Energy Commission did an independent analysis to test this claim: efiling.energy.ca.gov/GetDocument....

Their conclusion? "... there is no significant useful correlation between MERV rating and pressure drop for these
models."
Figure 3 displays measured pressure drop for all fifteen filters tested in the ATS laboratory. Filter particle removal efficiencies in the test set included filters rated at MERV 6, 7, 11, and 13. Four of the filters were 2” depth, and the other 11 filters were 1” depth. The data indicates that there is no significant useful correlation between MERV rating and pressure drop for these models, consistent with the consideration of filter labels in Figure 1.
