In the last meetings, he had mentioned that he had something for me — something that, he said, I would be happy to receive. When I later wrote to send him this photo, I also asked him about that mysterious gift. He replied that he was still looking for it, adding, “research takes time.”

I took this photo of him and Y.-C. Zhang during a walk through the ancient ruins of Rome, the day we were celebrating the Nobel Prize to Giorgio Parisi, in 2021. Joy, science, friendship, everything was intertwined in that moment.
