Yes indeed, and in a world of increasing uncertainty and unpredictability, snakeoil salesmen selling magical fixit cures are the choice of the day. But "events dear boy, events" and how they are responded to collectively will probably trump everything else in due course, dwarfing the whole shebang.

The massive challenge is the human capacity to navigate the kind of conflict that generates petty but very powerful feelings of envy, insecurity, rage, and fear. And which use the mechanisms of shame and humiliation to bring about frequent, rapid and chaotic change in the organisation of the group.

If ever there was a sign that the UK state is in a system crisis, it's when even a massive majority and disciplined intake of MPs can't stop people in Downing Street and HMT from getting sucked into petty turf wars that look even more pathetic at a time of geopolitical conflict.
