I have a weird special interest in the Kamloops, I'm always chuffed to find someone else who knows it! The fate of the stewardess in particular really stays with me.

Superior is really fascinating, because she's so cold that organic matter doesn't decompose. So there are so, so many ships still down there, and bodies, too. The Kamloops is wrecked off of Isle Royale, and it's perfectly preserved from the 20s, complete with, uh. Old Whitey, a sailor in the hull.

We deserve to be comfortable and safe. If people in the Northern Climes had to deal with our houses and our wardrobes they'd all freeze to death and die. Not joking. Let's get our gear together before an unseasonably long winter freeze.

If you DO need new coats or warmer PJs or to buy a heating pad or get weather stripping or whatever, please write it down so that when it's warm again in a couple days you don't say "well maybe I don't NEED it--" you need it bc climate change is real!!

I really love Brian Keane's soundtrack, "Death and the Civil War." The strings, piano, and guitar are perfect background music for me. (Maybe because I'm working on mid-19th c death and disease!)

Oh lordy, trying to figure out the currency conversions from old money into decimal alone gives me a headache.

I think you're right, since the one most guilty of it sits on Decatur St where a lot of unhoused folks camp out. And the manager can be a real asshole, so.

I'm just accustomed to doing those figures because of trying to figure out how expensive is expensive in the mid-19th century. But it's not the basic arithmetic that cabbage suggests.

Like, this dude has no understanding of comparing purchasing power with wages and why things like rent was cheaper but food so much more expensive, and how technology changed what was spent on staples and and.
He brought a cupcake to a gun fight, because there are actual historians in the room.

Also, it matters how people spent their money a century ago. If you look at recommended household budgets for working class people, rent was 1/4th of expenses. The big one was food, followed by clothes.
So they expected to pay for clothes but get a lot of wear from them. We pay more and get less.

No worries! I'm surprised it's hidden, as it's about as polite as I could be. Collegial, even.

I suspect I committed the unforgivable sin of telling a white woman she is showing an alarming amount of bias regarding socially constructed ideas of human categories in public.

This is embarrassingly ignorant and racist. The whole Caribbean isn't composed of poor people in shacks. That's a deeply colonised view of the world and you need to interrogate why you're comfortable showing that ignorance of yours to the whole internet and how to remedy it.
