@charlierosesmith3807 10 days ago As a gen Z American, here's my two cents on the take that our generation can't handle delayed gratification: we've watched the promise of "delayed gratification" fail Gen X and Millennials repeatedly in real time because we've had access to the internet since childhood. In elementary and middle school, I watched in real time on TV and online as Gen X had their entire life savings wiped out by the 2008-2009 depression, and as a teenager and college kid I've seen Millennials get absolutely shafted by jobs and degrees that went in promising them stable lives and then repeatedly ripped the rug out from under them, leaving millennials with no solid career progression or economic betterment to show after over a decade of consistent effort. Even outside of the internet, I've watched my grandfather, who was a computer programmer at IBM in the 60s, have his pension retroactively canceled after being a pensioner for decades, and I've watched this man in his 80s who's had two heart attacks have to go back to work 4 days of the week as an Uber driver to make ends meet, after he spent three decades of his life in a high paid office job that promised him healthcare and pension and the entire American dream. I don't have it in me to put up with the same shit. Maybe it's bratty and short sighted, but l've watched enough people older than me have enough of their decades of life ripped from them with the false promises of later rewards, so to my mind saying "this will pay off for you in the future" means you're not actually planning on paying out, you're hoping you can take advantage of my patience and goodwill. Pay me my rewards now, or I'll assume you'll never intend to actually reward me.

I had a visits from the tomato fairy! (Not to be confused with the cucumber fairy, co world different fairies.)

My brothers have been growing a bunch of different crops on their balcony this summer, and were kind enough to include several types of tomatoes for me/us.

I had a visit from the cucumber fairy!

Friends of mine always end up with a bumper crop, and are thankfully willing to share the wealth (I eat a lot of cucumbers, though this might stretch me a bit). These are very big cucumbers, probably weigh between 8-10 pounds for the 8 of them.

I haven’t had a beach day since the summer before I first got covid, so it’s been 3 years. There was a nice breeze, and no one else close by. I read a book. It was nice, though, like anything else I do, there are repercussions from my long-COVID. ☀️ 🌊 📖 😪

QUESTIONS ABOUT IRON AND MAGIC Technically this book is a spin-off from our Kate Daniels series; however, it can be read as a standalone work. For Kate Daniels fans: although this story is the first in the Iron Covenant trilogy, and the entire trilogy takes place before the events of Magic Triumphs, it is actually written to be read in the following order: • Iron Covenant 1: Iron and Magic • Magic Triumphs • Iron Covenant 2 • Iron Covenant 3 You don't need to wait for Hugh's entire story to be out. If you do, it won't be as fun, because there are some revelations in Iron Covenant 2 that are best discovered after Magic Triumphs.

Something I haven’t been able to do in a long time, between long-COVID and stuff making long-COVID worse, was make a bunch of burritos for the freezer. For those days when things are especially bad but I need to eat and want something comforting. Check alt text for ingredients (if you like). 🌯💜
Got my assembly line going with all my ingredients set up and plastic wrap on a white plate for ease of wrapping up for storage later. Tortilla, then a slice of the jalapeño cheese from a multi-pack of cheese slices, then a bit of peppers and onion sautéed with tajin, scoop of refried bean with chillies from a can, scoop of Cuban beans from a can, slice of mozzarella from a multi-pack of cheese slices. Well that fucking stung (it was ginger bug).

⅔ of a roll of paper towel.

3 times cleaning the floor on my hands and knees (plus cleaning the rest of my kitchen).

2 swollen and bruised knees.

I barely managed a shower before I collapsed in bed. Did I get any school work done today? No I did not.

Today is my birthday, the first big day since my dear friend

To both celebrate and memorialize, I got a new tattoo.

The dolphin is a sketch he drew for my bday a few years ago, and the icons around it are things that have meaning for our friendship.

Tonight was book club night (Queer Book Club, courtesy of Toronto Public Library, Parkdale branch), and we discussed Blackouts by Justin Torres. This was my favourite paragraph from the book, with the best line, I think.

“…ain't no shame in being a bitch, but, Lord, be a bitch that barks.”
My hunch is that Mad Man gave the dog up. Either that or he finally broke her. Anyway, she's old now, or else she's dead. But I have this fantasy that she's still chewing up the living room, still slamming against the limits of that cage, only now she's vocalized, yapping and howling, and it's a kind of music, and the whole neighborhood can hear her frustration and understand. And the song is a lament, something camp and bluesy, about how there ain't no shame in being a bitch, but, Lord, be a bitch that barks.

I did something that is impressive for me these days, having long-COVID and all that entails. I made soup from scratch on my own. Now days if I want to do something from scratch that’s energy intensive I’ve needed help. Go me!

Brunch! Fried duck eggs with tons of cracked black pepper and smoked paprika, and potato waffles (from the British import store),in honour of my dear friend who passed away a few months ago.

We had similar feelings on what to do and not do this time of year, and I’ll miss my buddy who understood.

Made my scratch mac&cheese yesterday. So much cheese pull. Medium cheddar, 2 yr cheddar, and mozzarella 🧀. Mustard powder, cayenne, smoked paprika in the sauce.

This is before it went into the oven to crisp up more cheese on top.

Went to the market at the Brick Works this morning. Delightfully misty and autumnal. 🍁
