The only strategy the government has consistently pursued is to take maximum pain for its errors and minimum reward for its successes
Great read from @iandunt.bsky.social on whether Starmer should stay or go, including the mystery of how, if you’re launching a popular climate, energy, and growth strategy, why wouldn’t you stage a press conference on it?

Laughing to myself about how many times @iandunt.bsky.social has said "cunt" in response to Danny Kruger praising How Westminster Works and Why It Doesn't.

Being in Government isn't only about policy. It's about using the office to communicate ideas and to shift narratives.

As the climate consensus frays and more countries turn inward, signals like this really matter.

I'll keep saying it, food price inflation is the main way people feel the cost of living crisis. Energy bills and interest rates may fall, but until the Government faces up to this reality, the sooner they can focus their political capital on helping working people feel "change" in their pockets.
Terrific piece this. Continue to find it bizarre how little “food inflation is off the chain” and “core inflation is above target” featured as topics at Labour conference or more broadly as “theories to why the government is unpopular”.
“I think politicians are ignoring prices and bills and hoping we’ll forget about them and find something else to complain about…”

My report on how the flighty Westminster bubble forgot about the cost-of-living crisis, which certainly isn't over:

Once again the Government shows a complete failure to understand and engage with

a) key drivers of food price inflation
b) how food price inflation is the most acute way the cost of living crisis is felt by consumers
Officials in Downing Street have blocked publication of a report warning that the collapse of tropical rainforests could push up food prices in British supermarkets
No 10 blocks report on impact of rainforest collapse on food prices

🥫Mandate all large businesses to sign up to the food waste roadmap, rather than relying on voluntary commitment.

Why has mandatory #FoodWaste reporting remained in limbo since its announcement in the 2018 Resources and Waste Strategy? 🍌🗑️
