From 2015 to 2018, Mamdani worked as a housing counselor in Queens, helping low-income tenants avoid eviction. It was there, in poorly heated apartments and packed housing courtrooms, that his politics hardened into purpose.

Rep. Jeffries is the Democratic Leader, having been unanimously elected to that position by his colleagues in November 2022. In that capacity, he is the highest-ranking Democrat in the House of Representatives. He is also the former Chair of the Democratic Caucus, Whip of the Congressional Black Caucus and previously co-chaired the Democratic Policy and Communications Committee where he helped develop the For The People agenda. Currently, the highest-ranking elected Democrat in the country is House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. Since Republicans control the House, Senate, and Presidency as of October 2025, no Democrat holds one of the top constitutional offices.

The fact of the matter is that party unity was already dead because establishment Democrats like Abigail Spanberger started complaining after the 2020 election about how Democrats needed to "never use the word socialism again" and to stop saying "defund the police".

They ended up being dead wrong.

She was the highest-ranking elected Democrat in the country whenever the president was a Republican. Republicans' slogan when they took back the House in 2010 was "Fire Pelosi".
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is absolutely the de facto head of the Democratic Party. Pelosi is the highest-ranking elected Democrat in the nation. She follows Vice President Pence in the presidential line of succession. But more than that, Pelosi is not the party leader in only a mere nominal, titular, sense. Pelosi is the party leader because of her extraordinary performance in just the short time in office. She came to her speakership January 3, in the midst of the recent prolonged partial federal shutdown. In the face of Donald Trump's bluster, Pelosi held her Democrats together and never wavered. In the end, it was Trump who called an end to the shutdown with no guarantee of funding for his desired border wall. Pelosi's performance marked the turning of a page in the Trump era, and it is as much for that accomplishment which makes her stand out as party leader. One of the debts we owe the January 6th Committee was its airing of behind-the-scenes footage of legislative leaders during that day’s insurrection. Keeping cool, making specific requests to authorities who could provide police reinforcements, determined to resume the announcement of the Electoral College votes, Pelosi stood out as the one leader in the Capitol, let alone the White House, who knew what had to be done and how to do it. That encapsulated her strengths as party leader and Speaker; it stands now as her valedictory. The vote capped off a remarkable couple of weeks for the speaker—her first apparent stumble. Since the Democrats retook the House last November, Pelosi’s run as the de facto leader of the Democratic Party has been charmed. Her most obvious potential problem has been on her left flank, more specifically with the four congresswomen known as “the Squad,” and even more specifically, with Ocasio-Cortez. She’s mostly dealt with the problem by insisting there was no problem; the freshmen had little real power, she intimated publicly. Amazingly to many observers, her gybes were taken with good humor by Ocasio-Cortez and her colleagues—but after an interview with Maureen Dowd, in which Pelosi dismissed them as “four people” who “didn’t have any following,” festering tensions spilled into public view. “When these comments first started, I kind of thought that she was keeping the progressive flank at more of an arm’s distance in order to protect more-moderate members, which I understood,” Ocasio-Cortez told the Washington Post. But, she added, “the persistent singling out” had reached a point “where it was just outright disrespectful.” A nonpartisan summary of any sound first draft will note three things: Pelosi is the most powerful woman in American history. She is the most consequential legislator of the post-Watergate era. She is the most successful and enduring messenger for the modern Democratic party.

Tuesday’s poll shows that Mamdani’s “support for Palestinian rights” was important to 96% of his voters — for 83% of his voters, it swayed their votes. His “willingness to criticize the Israeli government” was important to 88% of his primary voters, and 55% said it swayed their votes, according to the poll.

Mr. Mamdani’s résumé is comparatively slight. The son of a renowned filmmaker and academic, he bounced among gigs — working on one of his mother’s movies, as a rapper, a campaign organizer, a part-time tutor and a foreclosure counselor — before winning a seat in the Assembly in 2020. In Albany, he has a reputation more for advocacy than lawmaking.

In the days leading up to the election, Mamdani protested Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally, calling it “fascist.” Cuomo posted early on X on Election Day encouraging a vote for Harris and praised her months earlier while speaking at a Brooklyn church.
