The belief that butterflies were the departing souls of the dead dates back to ancient Egypt. In 1810, folklorist Eleanor Hull recorded the case of a young Irish girl being told off by her friends for chasing a butterfly in case it was her recently deceased grandfather.

The Roos Carr figures are dating to the Late Bronze Age or Early Iron Age. They were inadvertently unearthed by laborers during ditch maintenance at Roos Carr in 1836.

Some of my paintings on show @halesworth_gallery until 27th August. The gallery building was originally almhouses (17th Century) It has a unique atmosphere - narrow staircase, wide floor boards, windows, coffin hatch…all make it special. A space like this is a dream for me. #halesworth #painting
