I would say it is always our time that they need.

I think an increased understanding of the huge variations within "neurotypical" would be a benefit in the area. If we expect neurological to fit a narrow or rigid pattern, then more people will feel the need to identify differently.

Pretty much - welcome to the light side!

The reason we have very few CSPs compared to the number of recorded ASN learners, is that a CSP is not the equivalent of an EHCP. A CSP is only needed in highly complex situations where multiple agencies are involved in support impacting education. A CSP also has no link to funding as an EHCP does.

In my experience, 5 per class would be the lower end of the scale, with many schools now reporting upwards of 30% ASN. However, ASN is a much broader term in Scotland, and unlike England does not require a medical diagnosis. It includes difficulties such as bereavement, anxiety, trauma.

Just wondering where this increasingly formalized nature of behaviour management is taking place - it certainly isn't in Scotland. We need to be aware of reading English press reports and assuming these reflect the situation in Scotland.

The fact you are asking means you are an awesome grandma! Whilst there is lots you can learn about autism, your granddaughter is uniquely her. Be gently curious. Let her know that she can be herself with you, ask her what she thinks and feels, give her space and quiet when she shows she needs it.

I like this analogy. Some of the best autism training I have encountered describes autism as a different culture and encourages greater cultural awareness from both sides.

I liked the point made in this article that if we improve inclusion in the mainstream then families will feel less need to fight for special schools. This will take serious investment thought as children with ASN need smaller classes, calmer environments and safer relationships.

Interesting thread. I have noticed it is common for autistic people to have a very detailed memory of events from the past, especially events that involved high emotions. I am curious if this came up in any of your research?
