Trainee Solicitor. Usually public law, legislation & Newcastle Brown.
Constitutional conventions aside, the Lords can, strictly speaking, de facto veto the End of Life Bill if they pleased.

s2(4) Parliament Act 1911 would require the EoL Bill be re-presented in its exact form in the Commons for the procedure to work. The MP must fiercely resist amendments. Tricky.

National Guard seemingly called into federal service in LA.

I’m not sure 10 USC 12406 is met (the power to do so).

Even if we assume the “purposes” are met, it clearly states “Orders for these purposes shall be issued through the governors of the States”.

That doesn’t seem to have happened.

R (Duke of Sussex) v SSHD. Royal protection powers made under the prerogative. I wish courts would elaborate what prerogative that particularly was (King’s Peace?). Definitive lists hard to come by (MOJ study in 2000s; old books).

VAT Schools JR seeking declaration of incompatibility against measures in s.47 Finance Act 2025.

Remedying an incompatibility is discretional to Ministers (political). A bit of a dud remedy sought anyway, but would place HMG between its rule of law commitments and (popular) private school VAT.

I doubt very much whether the number of government lawyers has grown 47%. The figure of 11,155 is misleading or at least needs explaining. GLD (which does most of the government’s civil legal work) says it has 2600 lawyers. That’s grown a bit but nothing like 47%

I've got to say, the guy who accidentally became the Director of the FBI does 100% look like the guy who accidentally becomes the Director of the FBI in a mid-2000s comedy about a guy who accidentally becomes the Director of the FBI

I can be overwhelmed or underwhelmed, but I can’t be whelmed.

Or, at least, I think theoretically I could but the way I have set up my life seems to have made it very difficult.

I would love to spend more of my life whelmed. Someone whelm me.

New, from me: Carter was the last President to reform the civil service system. He took executive branch ethics seriously.

These aspects of his Presidency matter as they clash with Trump's vision of the administrative state as a politicized ethics-free zone.
