A more sensitive problem in my view is the character 猶 (犹) (which now has only abstract meaning) in 猶太 (犹太) yóutài "jewish". It contains the signific "wild animal" or "dog" 犭. I remember having read somewhere that there was an application for a change on this in Taiwan which was rejected.
