Autumn hawkbit: the seed has no stalk between feathery hairs and seed.

Whereas Cats ear does.

Sneezewort in brilliant white for #wildflowerhour fighting up through the mess of red clover and sweet vernal grass seed heads in the wexford meadow project.

My partnership with wild bumblebees is going from strength to strength, thank god.
I'll have betony and hemp agrimony seeds for me and the birds in the autumn from a dublin suburban garden. #wildflowerhour

Can't meet the harebell challenge but here is nettle leaved bellflower cuttings, actually flowering bizarrely and maybe they are taking. #wildowerhour

A few white butterflies floating around the meadow lately. 🙂

Guesses on a postcard.
Poor germination rate <5 % I'd say.

Ignore the discarded cherry seeds from nearby tree.

2 twayblade orchids at Girley Bog SAC, Co. Meath.
Not great photos.
Spotted one 2 years ago so that's an increase I suppose. Not great photos. Not sure if its common or lesser.

1. I rigorously use a thatching rake for establishing areas that are thick with grass and thatch. It can rip out the thatch but be warned it could also rip out wanted plants. After the area is established then it can be used with care and less vigor until the density of desired herbs is very high.

Love this photo from the wexford wildflower meadow project. I'm not overflowing with Oxeye daisy plants yet.

But there is a fab occurrence this year of a natural bouquet which stood out amongst sweet vernal grass seed heads - it seems sprinkled like icing sugar with sparkles of lesser stitchwort!

I like the flavour for a change to the usual jams. I tried last year but overboiled it or put too much sugar in the pot so that it set into a solid oversweet thick jelly.
Just collected the berries this week at that Appledrop colour stage. A moth has done a good job of defoliating one shrub.

Pet Dogs destroying curlew nest.

Hard to believe but Believe it!

Better still don't bring dogs to wild and wetland areas. Ground nesting birds are barely cling on.

This expansion area is doing well. Mostly hay rattle cover, with some hogweed, and creeping buttercup. But also prickly sow thistle and hawkweed, willowherbs and speedwell. DBS plugs are hidden in there somewhere.

Really noticing a big influx of hoverflies on small asters and buttercups in the meadow project. Here on hawkweed left in the lawn area. They must go elsewhere at night coz the flowers close up, maybe bushes and long grass 🤷‍♂️

Common centaury
On a calcareous roadside bank grassland in Co. Meath.
There was a bee orchid there last year but it hasn't flowered this year.

First small tortoiseshell for me this year, looking fresh and vibrant.
Also fresh meadow browns in the area near Trim, Co. Meath

Was going to collect cuckoo flower seed from a lone plant but orange tip caterpillar was in more need.

Not sure where its going to make its chrysalis, its distant from anything woody. Best of luck to it.

2. From the 2002 synopsis:
Molerick Bog NHA is a site of conservation significance comprising as it does a raised bog, a rare habitat in the E.U. ...This site is located in Co. Meath at the eastern extreme of raised bogs in Ireland and is one of only four raised bogs in the county.

1. That hard to describe feeling when you climb up with tingling anticipation to experience the vastness of our National Heritage Areas bogs as nature intended them to be

and you see this...

Blackshade bridge canal junction brideg area Co. Meath seems to have a wonderful cacophony of bird song and birds with easy photo and video opportunities for birders who know what they are doing (unlike me). Lovely reed buntings here but also many a warbler. @meathbirder.bsky.social
