I'm the PNW bureau chief at The New York Times. Send me story ideas, complaints, venting, cute dog pics. I may also comment on the Yankees and the Tar Heels, but always in a measured tone.

Oh, hello. Fancy meeting you here. It's going to take me a while to be convinced you're not all Russian bots designed to undermine my trust in civic institutions while also feeding my dopamine addiction for clicks. (I'm not scarred at all by the past few years. NOT AT ALL.)
Emerging from a brief social media disengagement - which I highly recommend - with some professional news:

I've started a new job as the Pacific Northwest bureau chief for The New York Times. Looking for story ideas, news alerts, background info, pet theories, restaurant recs, travel tips etc.

Lost Patients is a stupendous piece of reporting. And I edited Salmon Wars, so … oh hey, wow, that’s so cool! Yay us!
Both @opb.org and @kuow.org received Peabody nominations for podcasts this year, "Salmon Wars" and "Lost Patients," respectively.

Public media in the Northwest is on par with anything happening nationally in the podcast scene and I love that.

Joking aside, I kinda think this is exactly how you want important votes over leadership to go with the new-and-maybe-improved-who-actually-knows-for-sure Portland City Council. Messy but mostly in the open? With the political and philosophical lines clear to everyone paying attention?

I like to imagine Ted Wheeler, Charlie Hales, Sam Adams, Tom Potter and the ghost of Vera Katz are sitting in a bar somewhere watching this together. And laughing. So hard.
Somehow we’re going to wind up with Mike Johnson as council president
City Attorney speaking now. Says charter states that city councilors must choose the council president. Mayor is not authorized to cast tie-breaker.

So now what??

Loretta Smith is arguing charter clearly states the Mayor can break tie. (Smith nominated Clark BTW, and Mayor wd choose Clark)

Are you like me, and you're feeling very, very tired headed into the end of the year, and then you edited this smart rundown of all the big PNW news from 2024, and then you felt even more very, very tired but at least remembered why?
Are you like me and each year is approximately 1000 years long? My colleague @bradleywparks.bsky.social put together a great recap of some of the year's biggest news stories to remind us of all that was in 2024.
The year in Pacific Northwest news for 2024
From the election to ice storms to the Boeing door plug, these were the stories that defined 2024 in Oregon and Washington.

This would hurt us at OPB, but it was absolutely decimate smaller public media orgs in rural areas. If I was a cynic, I’d say that is maybe part of the plan: remove anything that isn’t non-mainstream propagandist media in places that already tilt right.
