Sculpted from hard basalt, this 16th – 17th-century object is in the form of Nandi the bull, vahana (mount) of Shiva.

The bull is portrayed as a young animal, whose horns are only buds, and is decorated with ornamental chains and bells.

I saw this striking relief of Nemesis at the Yale University Art Museum. I wonder why this particular Julius Aurelius Malochus devoted himself to Retribution herself; a personal vendetta that led him to his faith, or an inner pledge to help others find justice? Love the rearing griffin by the altar
