Why are we getting the worst parts of cyberpunk (failed states everywhere, unaccountable megacorps running experiments on the population, etc.) without the interesting parts (cyberspace, cybernetic enhancements, cool fashion)?

(So a few times in college, we played chess for shots.
Pawns are some wine or liquer, rooks/bishops are whiskey or bourbon. Traditionally the queen would be a shot of Bacardi 151; losing meant drinking whatever was left on the board.

(Finding out that public schools around here have been using that crap since the 80s has given me a 3rd reason to be glad my parents sent us to Catholic school way back then.
The biggest still being the more I learned about the Church the earlier I was willing to leave it.)

I'd already read quite a bit about the Haudenosaunee years before; I really enjoyed that take on alternate history.
I wanted to like Shaman, but the "language" was rough.)

(I always differentiate the math I do as an engineer from the finance-math that VC guys do.

It's a bit sad, really, that the wealthiest human in the world can't afford somebody to tell him the truth.
