I had a great time at NWO Biophysics.
- great science
- did not fall off the podium while talking
- got asked twice if I was a student or a postdoc (well done, anti-wrinkle face cream)
- got excellent socks for being in the poster jury

Had the best time visiting the IGBMC in Strasbourg! Great science, fun people, awesome cheese at the breakfast buffet.

In related news, my lab, these trolls, got me a card.

Last week, Babette van Amen started her PhD in the group after expanding all sorts of weird bugs in @gautamdey.bsky.social 's lab for 6 months!
Welcome Babette!

Terrible conference venue. Also there was melted cheese last night! Really, it's the worst.

Merry Christmas to those celebrating! My grandmother's log, edition 2024. Heavy decorations courtesy of my little ones.

A thought for all the other parents who cannot take credit for Sinterklaas presents because "Sinterklaas" brought them, but have to take the blame for withdrawing the presents because today is, in fact, not a holiday, and it's time to go.

And the cherry on top: abscission always happens at local points of low microtubule stability, which are also points of low Aurora B activity!
March 12, 2024 at 6:51 AM
By using stabilization or depolymerization of microtubules, we could show that that microtubule stability prevents abscission!
March 12, 2024 at 6:50 AM
Killing Aurora B activity completely abolished this microtubule stabilization
March 12, 2024 at 6:48 AM
We delved into the link between Aurora B and abscission, and we found that in stem cells, high Aurora B activity leads to a transient step of high microtubule stability.
March 12, 2024 at 6:48 AM
Also, high Aurora B activity and slow abscission were linked to high Wnt signaling!
March 12, 2024 at 6:47 AM
By inhibiting Aurora B activity, we could accelerate abscission. What came as a surprise is that Aurora B activity was tightly linked to cell fate. A short Aurora B inhibition led to faster exit from pluripotency!
