I vividly remember the first Avatar movie, which I saw in 3D on the big screen. As I sat there watching, I recall thinking this movie would cause audience members from just a decade prior to have actual heart attacks.

...The plot is easy to remember, too. Dances With Wolves, on another planet.

I did a Google image search for "Avatar cosplay", and blue-skinned cosplayers far outweigh the Avatar anime cosplayers.

Honestly, I never got around to seeing Avatar, and I know the aliens are blue, so I suspect people who actually saw it remember more.

If you're just trying to make a popcorn flick, sure. But the Avatar films have Things To Say - things I fundamentally agree with - and I don't think that its ephemeral nature is an accident. People want to see pretty SFX and awesome shooty stuff, but not think about who the bad guys really are.
