The depravity of this was neatly captured by the Reuters journalist who shot the image Trump brandished.

“In view of all the world,” he said, Trump used his work to push the idea that “white people are being killed by Black people.”

Trump’s Lie about Dead “White Farmers” Just Got Even More Grotesque
That photo he brandished to Cyril Ramaphosa was from the Democratic Republic of Congo—whose refugees the Trump administration is pointedly not welcoming to America.

All this draws on an internationalized version of "white genocide" theory that's festered on the global far right.

The "farmers" trope gives it a producerist feel: White salt-of-the-earth populations in their homelands, under siege by dark, rootless hordes. 5/

If there were a white genocide in South Africa, large numbers would be trying to come here. Is that happening? We don't know!

Dem aides tell me they've asked the State Department to clarify how many white Afrikaners are trying to come here. No answer yet. 4/

But there's something even darker here. Even as Trump used this image of the dead from the conflict in DRC to push a fake "genocide," Trump has suspended foreign aid and refugee resettlement in ways that are hurting countless humanitarian victims of that REAL war! 3/

First, note that the printout Trump used to humiliate Ramaphosa came from a conservative blog post, which featured an image from a Reuters video about DRC. It's plausible that an aide Googled "white farmers" and "South Africa," found this, and handed it to Trump. 2/

I live a red state and can verify there are almost zero Trump voters here who have any regret. It's a myth. Most of them still have their TRUMP VANCE signs up. They may be a little quieter now but they are giddy about deportations & fascism. It's a racist cult. It's alive, pulsating and gross.

(also, literally no historian denies that africans were active in the slave trade. the point is that the *transatlantic slave trade* was the product of european involvement and that it was a unique permutation of the trade such that it transformed half the globe)
