Knitters of #RBSCG25, what's on your needles (or crochet hooks)? I know you're out there; we have photographic proof from last year's conference!

"We keep receipts."

This is, of course, why they are going after heritage institutions, and why it's imperative to protect them.

Another weekend day with sunny weather, another armload of bramble canes cut and woven into the raised vegetable beds.
February 28, 2025 at 4:25 PM
The past three weekends, I have been gathering the longest, sturdiest bramble canes I could find from the hills around my house, to weave into raised beds for my garden. The result of many hours of work (interspersed with many pleasant chats with neighbours) is around four inches of height.

It's time to feed my granola habit again.

I am a cataloguer and as such, do not handle scanning requests, so cannot possibly confirm or deny this statement.

The UoE holds the archives of the Edinburgh zoo, and the archivist cataloguing their papers is one of my direct reports. This meant that today I had a meeting at the zoo. The members' entrance is closed for the winter, so I had to leave via the gift shop. This ended about how you'd expect.

Tonight, instead of trying to reset my sleep schedule for work like a sensible person, I am asking, "just how narrow can I make a narrow rolled hem"?

I cut my hair today. This is not especially noteworthy in itself; I chop off 6-8" of length about once a year or whenever my hair starts getting long enough to sit on. This time though, the bald spot I developed during radiation in 2020 has grown back to the same length as the rest of my hair.

I am lurching into 2025 by trying to claw my way back from a depressive episode before returning to work on the 6th, with the remains of a head cold that just won't shift. For the new year, I wish you the strength to keep putting one foot in front of the other, and the wisdom to know when to rest.

Can't brain, so embroidering instead. New-to-me variation on blanket/buttonhole stitch.

Remember these guys? They survived the fire.

Glazed in Amaco Potter's Choice temmoku (bowl) and seaweed over ancient jasper (mug). I probably could have used thicker coats of both the temmoku and ancient jasper, but didn't want to risk them dripping all over my kiln shelves.

In accordance with sod's law, now that I am officially finished with work for the holiday break, I have come down with a nasty head cold and promptly passed out to Steve as well. <facepalm>

Eeeee... the kiln is loaded and running on a low and slow 150°C cycle to make sure everything is bone dry. (And to make sure that it still works okay after 4 years of neglect.)

One more item ready to dry and then go into the kiln: a bowl (thrown in 2019) with archaeologish carved decoration

Would love to have a database of medieval vellum sutures to see the variety of approaches to repair taken during preparation. This from an as-yet unprocessed collection (coming soon).

Spent last night and this morning refining the shape and finish of this baking dish and lid. At the moment, it's exactly the size of the inside of the oven on our wood stove. Once dried and fired, it should juuuuust fit.

With the recent frosts, the tops of my jerusalem artichoke/sunchoke plants are dead and it's time to dig up the roots. They've self-propagated all over the garden, so there's lots to use up. What are your favourite ways to use sunchokes??

It is a tiny victory, but I threw these pots in 2020 before the start of the pandemic. Today, I attached the little lug handles to the two stacking containers and pulled a handle for the mug, which will go on tomorrow. I'm looking forward to having enough finished pieces to fill my little kiln.

Before starting to learn Mongolian, I should perhaps have thought about the fact that it's not only in a script I've never learned (Cyrillic), but the sounds that my Anglophone brain associates with the Roman transliteration are only loosely related to the sounds I'm hearing in the audio clips.

1/?: Today's installment of "Christine's not right in the head": I appear to have finished the Duolingo courses for Finnish and Scottish Gaelic (and Latin, but it's a very short course and doesn't cover nearly as much as the classes I took as an undergrad).
