Our objective is healthy rivers for every community in Wales. We are a registered charity (no. 1145675) and the umbrella organisation for the six regional Welsh river trusts. www.afonyddcymru.org
Mae'r asesiadau diweddaraf o berfformiad amgylcheddol Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water yn peri pryder pellach i unrhyw un sy'n poeni am afonydd.

Mae hyn yn golygu trydedd flwyddyn siomedig yn olynol o statws 2-seren i gwmni dŵr mwyaf Cymru.

The 2024 salmon stock assessments for Welsh and English rivers have been published today. Once again, they make for grim reading.

In Wales, the salmon populations in all our 22 “Principal Salmon Rivers” remain “at risk” of maintaining their future populations.

Water supply problems are not a new issue for the UK.

In the 1880s, a river in Wales was dammed to give Liverpool a desperately needed new supply. It sparked a scramble by other cities to secure their own Welsh water.

Our August river of the month: Afon Efyrnwy (Vyrnwy).

Mae Gwaith Natur Cymru wedi cyhoeddi heddiw ei asesu o gyflwr Ardaloedd Pwrpas Morol (APMau) Cymru.

Mae'n siomedig dysgu bod, fel SACau afon, nifer o APMau Cymru yn methu.

Natural Resources Wales have today published its assessment of the condition of Wales’s Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).

It is disappointing to learn that like river SACs, many of Wales’s MPAs are failing.

Mae'r 'Bil Amgylchedd (Egwyddorion, Llywodraeth a Chynlluniau Bioamloch) (Cymru)' newydd wedi'i gyflwyno i'r Senedd heddiw.

Mae potensial ganddo i helpu i wella afonydd Cymru'n sylweddol, er bod pryderon am y manylion yn parhau.

The new 'Environment (Principles, Governance and Biodiversity Targets) (Wales) Bill' has been introduced into the Senedd today.

It has the potential to help improve Welsh rivers significantly, although concerns over the detail remain.

Y Sul hwn (1af Mehefin) yw Diwrnod Rhyngwladol yr Eog Gwyllt.

Mae'n alwad i weithredu ac yn atgof bod dŵr oer, glân a systemau ecosistema afonydd iach yn gorfod cael eu hadfer os yw'r rhywogaeth bysgod hynod hon am oroesi.

Mae neidr atlantig yn cael ei dosbarthu fel yn risg o fethu â chynnal eu poblogaethau ym mhob un o 23 o afonydd pysgoty mawr Cymru.

Mae rhagfynegiadau yn awgrymu y gallant ddiflannu yn llwyr o rai afonydd Cymreig yn y 20 mlynedd nesaf.

This Sunday (1st June) is International Wild Salmon Day.

It's a call to action and a reminder that cold, clean water and thriving, healthy river ecosystems must be restored if this iconic fish species is to survive.

Atlantic salmon are classified as being at risk of failing to sustain their populations in all 23 of Wales’s “principal salmon rivers.”

Predictions are that they could disappear entirely from some Welsh rivers in the next 20 years.

Cadarnhaodd Julie James AS yn y Senedd ddoe y bydd y Bil Egwyddorion Amgylcheddol, Llywodraethu a Bioamrywiaeth yn cael ei gyflwyno cyn toriad yr haf.

Mae hyn yn newyddion i'w groesawu ac, efallai, yn dangos gwahaniaeth pellach yn y dyfodol o Loegr mewn cyfreithiau amgylcheddol.

Julie James MS, Minister for Delivery, confirmed in the Senedd yesterday that the Environmental Principles, Governance and Biodiversity Bill will be introduced before the summer recess.

This is welcome news and, perhaps, shows further future divergence from England in environmental laws.

Included is a very welcome recommendation to protect soils in Wales.

Regulation that prevents soils from running-off and reduces sediment, nutrient, herbicide and pesticide pollution, along with reducing flood risk is long over-due.

Yesterday, the 1st review of regulations to control agricultural pollution in Wales were published by @welshgovernment.bsky.social

The 23 recommendations made by the independent chair, Dr Susannah Bolton, were generally positive for Welsh rivers.

Today the Severn Estuary Commission reported its recommendations on tidal power generation.

The good news is that it is against a barrage which would almost certainly result in the loss of irreplaceable habitat and species, such as Atlantic salmon, lamprey, eels and Twaite shad like these....

Just as alarming was that the second biggest driver for new failure was cypermethrin, a powerful, highly toxic insecticide that affects fish as well as invertebrates.

Its use is still permitted in domestic pesticides, arable farming and uncertified forestry (55% of all forestry in Wales).

But......

7 out of 9 SAC rivers in Wales are now failing for phosphate, compared to 5 in 2021.

The already much beleaguered Cleddau deteriorated further.

And the biggest single driver for new failures was low fish numbers.

The positives....

The % of SAC river waterbodies achieving their phosphate targets has increased from 39% to 50%.

The Usk has improved markedly and phosphate levels in the lower Wye have dropped.

The latest water quality assessments for Welsh rivers have been published by Natural Resources Wales.

Sadly, they indicate the extent to which targets for 2027 will be missed.

Overall, there has been no change in the % of waterbodies achieving good status since 2021 (40%).

Mae'r rheoleiddiwr yn dweud bod yn rhaid i gludwr gwastraff cofrestredig gael gwared â dip gwastraff a'i waredu mewn cyfleuster gwastraff addas.

Nid oes cyfleusterau o'r fath yng Nghymru. Bydd angen gwell cefnogaeth ar ffermwyr i ddelio â'r cemegyn peryglus hwn.
January 30, 2025 at 12:17 PM
The regulator says that waste dip must be removed by a "registered waste carrier and disposed of in a suitable waste facility."

There are no such facilities currently in Wales. Farmers will therefore need better support to deal with this dangerous chemical.

Bydd hepgor pysgod acwstig ar gymeriant Hinkley Point C yn effeithio ar afonydd a rhywogaethau pysgod Cymru, gan gynnwys eogiaid yr Iwerydd sydd eisoes mewn perygl o ddiflannu.

The omission of an acoustic fish deterrent on the Hinkley Point C intake in the Severn Estuary will affect Welsh rivers and fish species, including Atlantic salmon that are already at risk of extinction.
