No specific data for Sask. cities, but @afilazzola.bsky.social's study suggested even under low-emission scenario, #ClimateChange could drive more than 150 more species into Winnipeg, while only about 30 species would leave it. @westernu.ca @usask.ca www.theweathernetwork.com/en/news/natu...

Proud of all this work! And glad to have started working with this project back in 2019 as a postdoc
Celebrating 30 years of alpine science in the Rockies 🌎 🧪

This July, our teammates @afilazzola.bsky.social and Hannah Adams joined researchers in Alberta’s Kananaskis Country to help monitor an alpine butterfly and its host plant—a project that’s been running since 1995.

Happy to have been back at UTSC to present our classifier work for this project!
Yesterday, we participated in a great workshop at UoT Scaborough kicking off a massive project, towards sustainable agriculture for Net-Zero food systems 👩‍🌾. We presented an initial inventory of urban agriculture for Toronto, sparking a discussion on sustainable agriculture strategies

If the Toronto Eglinton LRT takes any longer it's going to get decommissioned before it even gets used.
Just like it's sidewalks

Spain potentially banning short haul flights when trains are available is a fantastic way to combat emissions.

How I wish Canada had a similar train network

Death by data – can there be too much of a good thing?

I’ve heard it said before for famous musicians, it is not about the notes that they do play, but the notes that they don’t. The same is true about data.

Time Warp: Academia vs. Corporate Hustle

My biggest shift switching from #academia to a company? The value of time. Same hustle, but undefined hours to billable ones changed how I think about time.

Busting myths from leaving academia to a corporate world.

Going from a post-doc in ecology to a job in data science, there were many myths floating around that were discouraging. But, once I had a bit of time outside, I realized how so many of these myths were false.

Data analyst, data scientist, or data engineer. Which should you choose?

Titles vary a lot between jobs, and there are no official rules that are tied to each. In some, especially smaller companies, you might be expected to fill all three roles. But what do these roles generally look like?

Startup, established company, or FAANG+. Where should you apply?

Finding your perfect fit is crucial. Initially, I explored all three options without much selectivity, but hindsight taught me the importance of being picky. Where you work matters more than your job title.

So you’re leaving academia. Where do you start?

Well to begin, I think you should Marie Kondo your academic experience. Take a look at your day-to-day activities and ask “Does this spark joy?”.

New on here, so I'd like to introduce myself! I’m Alex and two years ago I made the jump from a post-doc in ecology to a corporate data science job. I love that I made this jump, but at the time, there was a lot of uncertainty. I wanted to join the chorus of others on socials to share my thoughts
