On the level of grammar, however, I'm wondering about the repeated use of a comma before "because". This seems to me at least non-standard, if not incorrect.

Once, one expected from a political party that it would have a vision that it believed in and would work to persuade voters to empower it to pursue that vision. Parties and politicians would lead voters, not follow them. We seem to barely even remember that, and we treat the new paradigm as normal.
