My little brother is also in highschool. His friends remind me strongly of my own when I was his age. A mixed bag but all of them are generally smart. He's in honors classes but not AP or ib. He's aware of a lot about the state of the world and has a strong sense of morals.

The class pass rate was still only around 60%. I got a 110% in the class. This was in 2018 (I know not terribly long ago, but prepandemic anyway) Now I know a lot of kids who are gen Alpha. A lot of them dgaf about school, but I don't know any who can't read. I dunno.

I was in AP, honors, or ib classes my entire highschool career. I was put into a regular history class by accident one time and was shocked at how illiterate/uneducated a lot of those kids were. The tests were open note, and she literally gave us the notes in order that theyd show up on the test.
