The New York Times: "Accent marks are used for French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and German words and names. [...] Do not use accents in words or names from other languages (Slavic and Scandinavian ones, for example), which are less familiar to most American writers, editors and readers; such marks would be prone to error, and type fonts often lack characters necessary for consistency. Sure. First two foreign lastnames with diacritics not native to Polish language that came to mind: š and ö. Notabene Polish doesn't have q, v and x yet we don't have a problem with using them too.

They do use diacritics in at least most romance languages (probably not in Romanian but idk) and I don't think they care just about making things easier since they include diacritics in English words of French origin.
