To truly improve access to justice, our research shows we need to tackle the root causes of legal problems in marginalised communities, and support people to get help at the earliest opportunity ↘️ shorturl.at/ZzEp4

Trusted community organisations made all the difference. The people most likely to get legal help were those who had support from someone they already trusted—like a community group. The orgs helped people recognise when they had a legal problem & take steps to deal with it↘️https://shorturl.at/ZzEp4

Levels of legal knowledge were very low. Few had the ability to identify legal issues. When participants did not take any action, this was partially a consequence of not recognising the problem. Many also struggled with the digital skills and confidence needed to take action ↘️ shorturl.at/ZzEp4
March 31, 2025 at 1:44 PM
Handling things alone was also common. Participants described taking practical steps to improve the situation, but usually without taking advantage of available rights. This resulted in unnecessarily long struggles to solve the problem and outcomes that fell short ↘️ shorturl.at/ZzEp4
March 31, 2025 at 1:44 PM
People often don’t take action because they take the word of more powerful actors. Without support, problems spiralled & pushed people into desperate situations. Often, they had no choice but to focus on surviving day to day or dealing with the most pressing problem ↘️https://shorturl.at/ZzEp4
March 31, 2025 at 1:44 PM
It highlighted that people experience complex clusters of problems. 35 participants experienced more than 130 legal problems between them (4-6 each). The most common were welfare benefits & housing. Clusters were linked to poverty, disability, changes in health & family breakdown ↘️ shorturl.at/ZzEp4
