Today I've learned about Belarusian gobelin weaving, the hydrangea season in Japan, and how to say "my garden is teeming with insects" from a native speaker. ✨

I also received this gorgeous card from one of my penpals in Tokyo.
A pop-up card produced by the Sanrio company and sold in Japan. This card depicts hydrangeas in full bloom behind a window pane, with a sparkle effect for rain on the window. The card is made of three layers of material - the back have hydrangeas, and the front has the window illustration. Taken together, it is a 3D window. It's not visible in the photo, but on the back of the card is room for a message. My friend has written to me about the rainy season in Tokyo.

Behold! Passiflora incarnata, better known as passionflower, and to some, maypop or even wild apricot! Today, while working under the floppy canopy, I'd hoped I'd found every hungry ant who found her way on to me... unfortunately, hours later at my desk, I'm finding that it was not quite the case...
A single passionflower bloom amid dense green foliage with bluish-white petals, a white and purple corona, and a structure of fine appendages between the petals and stamens. The large flower is arranged in a ring above the petals and sepals.

Some treasures from the garden for you.
This echinacea flower bloomed today. You can tell, because the petals are thin and sticking straight out, instead of drooping. The center of the flower is an incredible gold and bright green! The petals are pale purple. A single stem is shown. A flower that looks like Queen Anne's lace, but it's actually a Black Carrot flower! Yes, the regular carrots like we find at the grocery store, except this one has been allowed to go to seed and bloom out. The Black Carrot variety is an old heirloom. A single stem of the Dandy Collarette variety dahlia. This one is red with little white ruffles around the petal. The center is egg-yolk golden.

Rainbow Loveliness Dianthus (Barbatus)

The white variant is such a surprise!

Genus name comes from the Greek words dios meaning divine and anthos meaning flower

Like Sweet William, it's non-native to North America, so I am very careful with confining it
Two fringed blossoms of the Rainbow Loveliness Dianthus (Barbatus), a stunning rare variation in white! It's kept in a confined and closely tended part of the garden and watched carefully so that it does not spread.

Ok I know this doesn't look like much of anything but I just removed SO MUCH baby crabgrass from the pollinator patch
A pollinator garden lined with brick containing zinnias, milkweed, sunflower, sweet alyssum, bee balm, and marigolds. The plants are very small now, only about an inch or two tall.

I know what you mean 😭! That is a great question thank you!! We use metal "Squirrel Baffles". They wrap around and attach to the feeder pole and typically cost between $15 and $30. We got ours from Wild Birds Unlimited and they are very durable. Here are some example photos.

Good morning!! Very excited to see a young Downy Woodpecker with a copper head at the feeder!

Adult Downy males typically only have a red patch on the back of their head, and female Downies have no red at all.

Now, time to brew. ☕🍵
A beautiful immature Downy Woodpecker on the pole of a bird feeder. They have a copper head color because they are young. The extent of the coloring makes me think this is a male. "Young Downies of both sexes have red feathers on their crowns, although the color is more extensive on males and sometimes absent on females. The size of the patch varies geographically and occasionally among individual nest-mates. The feathers are not entirely red but usually just red-tipped. Within weeks of leaving the nest, young woodpeckers replace the red crown feathers with black ones. Later, males grow bright red feathers on the back of the head, forming the distinct red spot that distinguishes them from females, which have no red on the head or elsewhere on the body." I reply: "There are several things going on here. One, that first biscuit looks like was baked from frozen, which can account for the texture you're experiencing. Their thing is that they make biscuits kind of like making pastry, where they focus on manipulating the fat to make them as flaky as possible - not soft and light. Unfortunately the second biscuit picture you shared looks commercial rather than homemade - that's what Grands Biscuits from the can look like when they cook up. Where did you get they plate?" A screenshot from text messages app of me and my friend B talking about biscuits. B says: "(I got the picture) from the internet. But the round thing is what us non-southerners think a biscuit is." I reply: "Yes biscuits are typically round. Places that sell biscuits in volume will often cut them into squares because it is more convenient and they "waste" less dough that way (Money saving). You're not wrong. I don't have anything square biscuits and I've cut my dough that way before too, perhaps if I'm going to be using them for sandwiches later. However, the way my momma taught me to make biscuits from her big bowl is shaped by hand, gently, soft as a cloud and light as a feather, placed on the greased baking sheet until just touching, and baked until brown on the bottom and golden on the top. There is no obvious CRUNCH and the inside, rather than being 1000 layers, is very soft."

The thing about growing my own salad greens is that harvesting takes a LOT of time because I'm constantly finding new friends among the leaves

My spinach plant has gone to seed, so the leaves have changed and begin to resemble an arrowhead and a floret has formed. Nestled in the floret is an unmistakably red ladybug trying to avoid being seen by sheltering in the leaves.

This morning I am thankful for water. Evergreen gratitude there. I'm grateful for the flowers in my yard and all the little insects. The House finches at the feeders. The Red-bellied woodpecker who lives in my neighbor's tree. The lacy white blossoms of the elderberry.

Observe the beautiful Safflower, one of humanity's oldest crops! This one was born from seed scattered by wild birds at the feeders. I used to pull up the emerging plants mercilessly, until I learned that they produce beautiful thistle-like golden flowers! Now I'm excited to see the rest bloom.
Three stems of Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius) , a thistle-like annual plant in the family Asteraceae. The stem in the middle has a beautiful yellow bloom. The plant appears spiky. If you're able to observe closely, there are tiny insects making homes in the brachts near the flower.

A magnolia flower I saw on my walk the other day. This one is very large, the size of a dinner plate, and open. Dark red dianthus flowers growing in a neighbor's flower bed. It's rare that flowers that aren't roses this deep crimson red! It was exciting to see. Native phlox flowers in purple and white growing in my vegetable garden.
