Oh, they’ll still be looking for a DG by next Easter. I mean who the hell wants that job now?

They do it because - like politicians - journalists are incredibly inward looking. They care far more about other politicians/journalists are saying and thinking than they ever do about the wider public. Most of both camps are pretty dismissive of their consumers…

At least we can comfort ourselves with the knowledge that all that fawning and royal arselicking we endured during his state visit has paid off. Oh, hang on…

It’s obvious if you know what Trump actually said. It absolutely was not obvious if you were watching the programme.

But that’s exactly why it’s terrible: it gives their legions of enemies a big heavy stick to beat them with. They *knew* the far right would seize on any case of sloppiness or slant, but still they let this one through. And now the stick has smashed everything up.

No. I want them to put a small pause between different sections of VT, so that it’s clear what someone is saying. Splicing together different bits of VT to make a false sentence has been used to comic effect for years but has no place in serious journalism.

I’d forgotten all about that silly old bag. And now I shall enjoy forgetting about her all over again.

That’s exactly it, though. You can condemn Trump just by using his own words and actions without editing or amendments. So to choose to splice his speech in such an obvious way as they did (surely no one disputes that they did that, right?) seems to me to be a massive error of judgement

What’s “orchestrated” about it? They dishonestly edited the most controversial man in the world. What the fuck were they thinking of? We all deserve better, surely?

What was ‘confected’ about it? It was a deliberate and stupidly dishonest edit - of the single most controversial man in the world. What the fuck were they playing at??

I don’t disagree, but the dishonest edit of Trump’s speech was both deliberate and monumentally stupid. I don’t envy any DG these days, but Davie did little to make me trust his judgment or his integrity

I knew loads of blokes who would hang around the office so they would get home just as the blighters were getting into bed so they could read the little moppets a bedtime story. Also so they missed the hour before, where they’re screaming around the house and trashing the bathroom.

As long as we leave housebuilding to the private sector we will never get more accessible property. The entire industry - developers, builders, financiers, agents - depends for its existence on supply remaining well below demand. All you’ll get by building on the greenbelt is bigger profits

Thanks Rachel. I really appreciate your constructive comments. (And say hello to lovely Retford for me: all my mum’s family come from Ranskill and I have fond memories of the market square on a Saturday)

“I think the age of NATO is fully over” (direct quote, as I’m sure you know) isn’t the solidarity I need right now. But your wider point has been heard clearly - I should go and review some of the assumptions I’ve made. It would be good to have hope again…

Ah. Lovely Brighton. As case studies go, it’s hard to beat. I’ll give you that. Okay - I’ll pay a bit more attention and see whether my historic doubts can be put to rest. Thanks for the constructive conversation!

Well you certainly sound charming. Nothing like a bit of abuse to improve a considered discussion, is there?

And most of those billions goes straight to the shareholders. Who are…oh yes - our pension funds. Paying much-deserved pensions to millions of public- and private-sector employees. This “someone else will pay” mentality is just a populist myth.
