The Russia‑Ukraine energy shock: Why geopolitics demands a clean energy shift

Most people don’t know this: Heat pumps REDUCE gas consumption even if running 100% on electricity from a gas fired power plant.

From the WSJ piece: "Reducing reliance on fossil fuels looks like Europe’s best shot at saving its domestic manufacturing and stopping other governments from pushing it around."
“I think Greenland was a wake-up call. There is more talk [in Brussels] about replacing one dependency with another.”

This is what I told the Wall Street Journal about Europe’s increasing dependence on US LNG following the end of Russian pipeline gas.

A reminder: ICE vehicles waste a whopping 80% of energy in their fuel.

EVs are propelled by entirely different mechanisms. Energy enters the vehicle as electricity, which directly powers the drivetrain making it 3-4x more efficient.

Europe’s Electricity Grids Need a Major Boost
On a sunny afternoon, solar farms in Spain can generate far more electricity than local consumers need. But only some of that surplus can flow north to other parts of Europe because transmission links...

What if the EU were a country?

Life expectancy at birth (years):
🇪🇺 ≈ 81.7
🇺🇸 ≈ 79.3
🇨🇳 ≈ 77.9
🇷🇺 ≈ 73.1

A United States of Europe would have a higher life expectancy than Russia, China, and the US 🇪🇺

United States of Europe Now! National leaders: unlock our potential!
Across the globe, fascists, imperialists and tech overlords are on the rise. Xi wants to lead an autocratic world order, Putin wants to dominate Europe, and Trump only wants what's best for Trump. Meanwhile in Europe, our leaders fail to act on the big problems we face, whether that is the climate crisis, poverty and inequality or migration. Extremist forces grow as a result. We fail to stop wars and crimes against humanity taking place on our doorstep. The European Union is stuck. Do we wa...

Gas is not the effective 'bridge fuel” the fossil fuel industry claims it is. During peak energy demand, clean flexibility solutions can support renewable energy variability in a more efficient, affordable, and sustainable way than gas.

Big moment for Europe: in December, fully electric cars outsold petrol-only cars in the EU for the first time.

This shows that clear, consistent policy works. Which is exactly why backtracking now would be a mistake. Rolling back targets or creating uncertainty would slow investment and innovation.

We are still dangerously dependent on US military power - and it's a risk we can't afford. We need an EU army 🇪🇺

This month’s electricity blackout in Berlin has sparked interest in balcony solar & batteries, but true energy resilience isn’t about everyone going it alone.
Storage, flexible demand & decentralised renewables work best as part of a strong, well-planned system.
