I realize the danger for these R state legislators if they publicly defy their MAGA warlord

And I’m grateful to this guy for throwing a wrench in the plans

But however sincere his outrage is about the ugly language, I’ll bet that this is also about taking whatever cover he can get for his vote

Just a geyser of the lowest, stupidest prejudices

Reality’s never been a strong suit, but now he’s completely adrift

Strawberry-rhubarb is the supreme pie

I saw that as an old guy brought up in his youth on his grandmother’s sublime, super-patriotic apple pies. I simply didn’t know what I was missing

Bill, there’s no such thing as a cherry pie that’s “not too sweet”

Wonderful sentiment to aspire to. I mean that. But very much a “perfect our union, arc of the universe bends toward,” etc

“The night before a Western holiday”

Yes, the profound religious significance of Thanksgiving

You’re living the situation; I’m far off, at a distant institution

I’m not trying to offer up a defense of this admin

I’ve spent a lot of time with ugrads, and my point is simply that campus activists tend to wildly overestimate the degree to which it would be possible to openly defy the feds

There’s a difference between “the university will not protect you from ICE” and “the university cannot protect you from ICE”

Should public and private schools reject the regime’s demands (‘the compact,’ etc), and throw sand in the gears whenever possible? Yes

Will outright defiance stop them? No

I’m with you on Rogue One (apart from the first film and Empire SB, of course)

Let’s get naked?

Your last sentence? Brilliant
November 23, 2025 at 9:24 PM
Sorry, I misunderstood your statement
November 23, 2025 at 9:11 PM
Stancil racist? Sure. That language is not inherently racist
November 23, 2025 at 9:09 PM
At the risk of appearing to align with the odious Will Stancil, it’s more than a little disingenuous to say “fight with” is somehow racialized

Left or right, black or white, people online react to critical questions as someone spoiling for a “fight” with them. Why are you contradicting me?, etc

Can you make the ref unsmiling? They’re supposed to be neutral
November 23, 2025 at 8:41 PM
It may not help the little one, but for your own sanity, remember that many of the people around you aren’t upset with you or the kid. They get it.
November 23, 2025 at 8:24 PM
They may well have known. They just didn’t care
November 22, 2025 at 11:06 PM
I doff my cap to you

What could possibly go wrong?

Militarily, it wouldn’t be hard to crush Venezuelan forces, assuming they choose to die for the regime. And that the U.S. regime doesn’t care how much civilian blood it spills.

But it won’t end there, will it? We have a shitty record on occupations and reconstruction

Their offspring will be weapons, arrows in the quiver, that type of thing?

He’s got the requisite poisoning-a-sacred-occasion-by-waving-firearm-lifestyle-accessory bit down cold

House GOPers required by statute to release one of these or

a) gun nut family XMas card

b) candidate blasting sheaf of federal legislation

c) vid, menacing prospective son in law at gunpoint

I’d seen plenty of rural countryside growing up in New England, but I got off the train from London and found myself in the Shire

Imagine that’s changed, in the post-Charli XCX era?
November 22, 2025 at 7:42 AM
In 1987, I spent a night in Bishop’s Stortford, unaware that Cecil Rhodes was its most prominent native son, what with the Internet not yet being invented and all

As a history-minded American teen, abroad for the first time, I was astounded by the Romanesque church and occasional thatched roof
