Higher Education careers & employability, football (Arsenal, Southend United, Morpeth Town, Napoli - in that order), Northumberland, walking, tea shops, and a bit of politics, are my things
Love an Autumn morning commute when the colour of the sky and clouds outside mirrors the colour of the seats inside the @lner.co.uk train.

Cracking @camsell59.bsky.social article in latest @wsc.co.uk issue, on away fans in the home end. I still wake up in a cold sweat remembering time I instinctively jumped up to celebrate a late Thierry Henry goal at the Riverside & sitting through the 4-4 in the Leazes lower tier at St James’ Park!

Twelve years to the day since I went to my first Serie A match live - attending the Stadio San Paolo (as it was known then), for a Napoli vs Torino match - whilst on a family holiday to Sorrento. Such a fun experience - that cemented an interest in calcio and that part of Italy. #forzanapolisempre

Working from home lunchtime treats from the new addition to the high street in Morpeth. Great to have Pink Lane Bakery in the town. Delicious!

First #sufcexiles trip of the season for me, and it’s a return to Morecambe. Pleased they are still in existence. It’s the Shrimps vs the Shrimpers. #yellows

Inspirational public lecture delivered by @profjasonarday.bsky.social at @newcastleuni.bsky.social this evening. Didn’t shirk from challenges of times we are in, but message of hope for the future through anchors of love, sympathy & empathy and showing a greater purpose than those who seek to divide

Love the golden colours on the morning commute at this time of year, walking up through the Toon and on to the @northumbriauni.bsky.social campus. Need to make the most of these bright Autumn days.

There was an interesting villa too, which was clearly used for organisation and people development sessions. It was a smart building, tastefully renovated, with lovely gardens. The whole campus was very impressive.

Bit of a busman’s holiday for me yesterday visiting some excellent Universität Zürich buildings - including the amazing terrace on the tower which had stunning views over the city - as part of the Open House Zürich weekend. Wonder how busy the monthly Careers Services drop in is? #UZH

One stadium visited for a match last weekend (in Ulm), another seen getting to and from a visit to the Fernsehturm in Stuttgart #GAZistadion #Donaustadion #FloodlightFriday

It was pouring with rain in Stuttgart this morning, but fortunately this stunning building was just around the corner from the hotel, so time for a quick visit before heading out to the airport for the journey home. Breathtaking! #stadtbibliothekstuttgart

Final match of our football weekend in Germany was a 3. Liga match between SSV Ulm and SSV Jahn Regensburg. Ended up 2-1 to the home team. Saw another sending off, our first pyro and first rain of the weekend! Overall 10 goals, 2 sendings off and one missed penalty. Superb entertainment.

The chap in front of us thought the come back was on when the home team scored late on. It wasn’t! Mainz run out 4-1 winners … having played most of the second half with ten men.
September 20, 2025 at 5:07 PM
The away team Mainz 2-0 up at half time at Augsburg, and it could have been four. Much more clinical than the home team. A drinks/cooling break needed in the 29 degree heat! Impressive bike park at the WWK arena. We didn’t make it through the VIP entrance! #bundesliga

Decent start to German football weekend trip to Stuttgart, despite the flight from Edinburgh landing late meaning we missed the first 20 mins of the match at the MHP Arena. Disappointing result for St Pauli but their fans sang throughout creating a great atmosphere. Great experience.

Don’t often see @lner.co.uk trains running along the banks of the Tyne (rather than on the bridges over the river). A bonus sighting on our walk today, near Wylam, due to the diverted route as a result of the engineering works closing the line between Newcastle and Edinburgh.

It’s ten degrees cooler than it was this time last week (in Elgin!) and there’s drizzle in the air. Good to be back at Craik Park though for Morpeth Town’s match tonight. Lancaster City are the visitors.
August 19, 2025 at 6:48 PM
It was goalless at half time but two quick goals - both tidy finishes - early in the second half have put the away team … with their vocal fans … well and truly in control of this cup tie.

Missed Southend’s first match of season, at Gateshead on Saturday, as we’re on hols. Getting my live football fix tonight at Borough Briggs for Elgin City vs Inverness Caledonian Thistle in the Scottish Challenge Cup. Sitting on an embankment, with the sun going down, at 23.5 degrees! Can’t beat it!

It’s always a long car trip from Northumberland to Essex to visit my folks for the weekend, but felt even more so in today’s Heat Wave amber alert. Enjoyable - if hot - walk around @midsandeastnt.bsky.social Anglesey Abbey Gardens, after lunch in the excellent cafe, helped break up the journey.

Super proud of youngest son who graduated from @uniofstandrews.bsky.social yesterday with an MPhys Physics degree. He, and his cohort, started in 2020 and showed great adaptability and perseverance dealing with the Covid disruption. Fab meal at Rufflets Hotel in evening topped a day of celebrations.

Another excellent @wsc.co.uk issue … with the added bonus of a summer tournament preview and wallchart. #WEURO2025

Classic Father’s Day: boys know me well, with presents of books on Italian football (looking forward to this @rickhough.bsky.social) and a HOPE not Hate exposé of far right activity; trip to Cragside - with bonus deer spotting; evening watching Serie b playout, and 2nd episode of Spooks series one!

A couple of Arsenal legends, and great supporters of the Women’s team and football, there to witness it! #COYG
