Perhaps a minor detail amongst his qualities, but I've never heard any other guitarist do the pick-scrape/plectrum-drag into a crashing chord as well as he does it

4. Stereophonics — Local Boy in the Photograph

Lest I be accused of favourably editing my past deeds. Look. Sometimes I'd go into HMV and just buy a fistful of 99p 7"s. I don't think this got played more than once. ("Played more than once" could be an album title by these shifty cunts)

3. Kings of Leon — The Bucket

The later Sex On Fire stuff makes me puke into my mouth. This feels fresh, brilliant — the "southern Strokes" is apt. It's an oddly moving ode to a sibling, and "18 balding star/golden falling heart" is a weird and beautiful lyric.

2. Coldplay — Yellow

The classic philosophical question: "if you could kill Hitler as a baby, would you?" feels somewhat pertinent here. While I have a visceral, biological need to turn the radio off if these fuckers come on, I did make it halfway listening through this.

That's a fine idea.

1. Idlewild — I'm a Message

Wow I still fucking love this. It feels young and exciting and charged with the simple power a band has before they've learned to examine what they're doing. I don't recall any of their other early songs, but I dunno where this energy went.

Already feel bad for saying they're cunts. I'd like to amend this to "people whose music and sometimes character/personality became objectionable to me, by varying degrees of severity." This represents progress for me. OK. I'll continue with the thread.

Not exactly what you're asking but I think/hope in the spirit of the question — I'll never tire of recommending @somafm.com. It's (wonderfully curated) radio as opposed to choosing your own stuff to play, but it's one of the last truly great things left on the internet, and run by good people.

Because I am a fool who made poor choices, I own none of his LPs. Happy to report I have just taken my first step toward redress by pre-ordering the upcoming reissue of Gemstones.
