Didn’t Wyden propose this very idea with some Republican in like 2006? I think he wanted to give everyone 12k/yr (at the time) for health expenses and call it a day. Not surprising he’s open to this.

Another take. Agree on the merits but to improve a system that is perpetually vulnerable to powerful interests, sometimes you have to elevate sub-optimal concepts to catalyze the public. In other words sacrifice efficiency to maximize political support. Exactly the issue California HSR suffers from.

Even in the federal government, there’s a presumed trust responsibility to the American people. We’re not prescribed to be nihilists (although some may prefer federal scientists were to further a particular policy agenda).

Part of what I love about this advice is it gives people practical experience and exposure to the systems as they operate now. So you learn not only how to work within them, but also what to do when they fail. (And of course those power structures that have to be changed or dismantled)
