An encouraging story of local politics: a couple weeks ago, contractors replaced the storm drains on our corner. Ours is a low-lying neighborhood, so this was a good thing. In the process, they bumped a telephone pole, leaving it to lean precariously over the street, cracked at the base. (1/n)

Last winter, I bought a pair of South African-made Jim Green boots. They're very good: comfortable, well-made, and available in wide sizes. Today they emailed about their latest offering: the Bush War Boot. There's a promotional video, too, featuring Rhodesian (white-supremacist) soldiers. Wtaf?
