I know there's lots of ways this can manifest, but pointing out that you're from somewhere that Labour haven't come second in a generation - it's now *two* generations - and that a genuinely inclusive party might ask questions of itself about that, goes down badly.

... his Tory contemporary, on the other hand, I actually quite liked (even though I disagreed with him on lots of stuff).

I'm put in mind of the chap (this is a lifetime ago), in my undergrad cohort at UEA. He went from hawking the Socialist Worker on a Saturday to full New Labour apparatchik in about four years.
