Transit is my profession and way of getting around.
Perceived US threats—from the War of 1812 to Fenian raids/post Civil War tension and 1890s tariff tactics—fuelled Canadian unity and patriotism. Fears of annexation spurred Confederation in 1867, shaping Canada’s resolve to remain sovereign—“The True North Strong and Free.”

CTA is introducing a 10-minute bus network to chicago this month across 8 routes, expanding to 20 bus routes by year-end 🥳

it stands out from other US "frequent" networks:

-runs every 10 min or better as opposed to every 15

-effective 7-days a week, all-day from 6am-9pm (9am-9pm weekends)

Leaving people with mental to health issues without treatment is bad for them and riders, but NYC’s policy on committing people to involuntary commitment is not the answer.

There’s a chance to reassess what it takes to deliver decent (being realistic) transit in severe weather, of which more is expected in the future. TTC needs to reorganize certain areas, commit resources, apply training and a can-do attitude. Better is possible youtu.be/KACK18UFIlU

TTC used to team up TTC staff and Toronto parking officers to proactively tow cars "afoul" of the rail. The record I remember was 424 cars towed in one day to keep the streetcars running. Could also give authority to Special Constables to tag and tow.

If global carbon emissions keep rising until 2040. The cost of maintaining roads in just the US will increase by $100 billion a year by 2050 (2018 $), or 50% of what state/local governments spent on roads in 2021.

So many reasons to be concerned about the current trade war starting. But focusing on transit alone, tariffs will add 10s or even 100s of millions to Canadian transit capital programs and make operations more expensive. For TTC this could be in the order of ~$100 million/yr.

Good to see a strong and active Chair and Commissioners focusing on service - but it shouldn’t take a motion at TTC to get a real and sustained focus on service reliability and focus on the basics of state-of-good-repair.

If gas-powered car sales are down 500k and EV sales are 200k, does that mean overall car sales are down 300k? If so, are ppl making less trips overall? Because transit ridership has not grown especially quickly, considering population growth. www.thestar.com/news/canada/...
Reports of the EV’s demise in Canada have been greatly exaggerated. Here’s why
Since 2017, gas-powered car sales have dropped by nearly 500,000 vehicles annually — or about 25 per cent — while ZEV sales have grown almost tenfold.
