I believe Open/Libre both work fine for that; I've had no issues working with editors using Word wrt tracking changes, comments, etc.

It probably deserves a much deeper examination and assessment than I'm going to give, but the very brief summary would be: It's often not nearly as satisfying as designers think it will be, and frequently a pain in the rear for a GM to actually work with on an ongoing basis.

Obvious solution is to kill all their characters, ideally in a camp attack. That'll get the numbers down!
