In July, we decided to try to meet Nikki and Sion's landlord again by visiting the address listed in their contract - which is in Newport. A group of us went with Nikki, who brought with her all the necessary documents and evidence to make it easy for the landlord. At last, we met the man! (5)

But what if we deliver a physical letter ✉️ to the landlord? That would be hard to ignore, right 🤔? So, in June, a group of us visited one of the landlord’s businesses, Heavenly Desserts in Cardiff. Here’s how that went 👇

Cardiff Council are trying to kick 17 families out of their homes for alleged links to the 2023 riots.
This is disgraceful behaviour from the council. They have no desire to help those in need and instead look to punish those who were expressing anger over a devastating event in their community.

Yet another productive members meeting! We had thoughtful discussions about challenges faced by residents in different neighbourhoods of Cardiff and made plans for outreach activities this summer. We also had a lovely recap of all the wins we’ve achieved over the past 5 months!

Ashley and Kate said: “Organising with ACORN gave us a voice. We felt like we were finally being heard after just talking to blank walls for months. Everyone was just so helpful and supportive.”

Kicking off the week with an ACORN victory: Over £100 of fees waived for Ashley and Kate
Our members Ashley and Kate were living with serious disrepairs in their flat. The Rent Guru, their letting agency, was not only unprofessional in arranging repairs but they also demanded maintenance fees.

3️⃣ Permanent housing found for A and his family following eviction resistance. A, his wife, & 2 young kids were given an eviction notice by the council. ACORN mobilised members who successfully blocked the eviction from going ahead on the day. The family have now also settled into their new home.

2️⃣ Deposit theft overturned for Jenna! Her landlord attempted to deduct the deposit even though Jenna left her property in a better condition than when she had moved in! ACORN members supported Jenna in drafting a demand letter to challenge the deposit deduction, which won Jenna her money back!

1️⃣ Rent rebate and access to flat for Georgia, whose landlord wanted to retile the corridor, which would block the flat's front entrance, with no prior notice. We mobilised members on the day and ensured Georgia got alternative access to her flat, plus rent rebate in compensation!
